Technically it's both. Sarcasm can be verbal irony. I was just using irony as an umbrella term.

The amount of irony in this thread is just...wow. Like next thing we know, his creepy stalker undertones are also part of an elaborate and ironic plan to mess with us. Newfound respect for Amaury. *claps*

 

But if nobody executed those actions, you would have no way of conveying any humour. So although you are sarcastic now, you should really be grateful.

 

But I would also be short of my humour if I were grateful. You are asking me to stop my humour for the sake of my humour. That doesn't make sense.

 

But you'd rather your humour drives away your source of humour? That would be even more backwards. And besides, it's not like you really have to say that you're grateful to be grateful. That's just something wieners made up.

In the same way, you like to have someone challenge you in a game of chess. That doesn't mean you don't want to win.

You don't have to read it. But I digress. If we take over another thread I'll try to go to private, but I get the sense he likes the spectacle and wouldn't be as willing in private.

 

Of course. But you if it was a good game of Chess, then there's no reason to punch the opponent in the face afterwards so he never wants to play Chess with you again.

Well you're both just arguing for the sake of arguing. You're not debating. There is nothing to debate. You're both just making yourselves look like *******s, picking at and analysing everything the other says, in an attempt to look smarter to a bunch of strangers. It's unsightly, and rude, to expect people to just ignore it, when it goes on and ****ing on for three pages now.

I disagree. Beating someone at chess while still making them want to play against you again, would be more like making retorts and what have you that work well. Punching them in the face would be to use sarcasm to tell someone flat out that they are a myron.

 

I see it more like I'm trying to teach how to play chess properly instead of saying "King me! The end." every turn.

 

I do it for fun more than anything. You can go do your thing for fun, while we do ours.

I'd say what you're trying to do is more like make him go over to playing checkers, the game of kings.

 

I'm even better at checkers than I am at chess.
