even though english is my native language, i think its very pretentious to say that english is a universal language. just because lots of people speak it (thank the british empire for that) doesnt mean that we should expect everyone to be able to. i hate the way english tourists go to foreign countries expecting everyone to speak their language, its so lazy. and then in countries like the UK and the USA there is very little effort made to learn 'foreign' languages.

I agree. English is one of the more commonly spoken languages around the world, but it's never been emphasized or stressed as the international language medium, and as such shouldn't be treated as one.

If English was indeed the international language, we shouldn't have to hire interpretors at UN meetings.

I don't really agree. Sure you can have one language so everyone can understand each other, but sooner or later some countries might altogether forget about their native language, and some languages will become dead and forgotten.

    Bad idea. :/

People usually try to learn the langaue. Well whatever they can anyway...At least if theyre even minutely responisble they do.
Alotta countries DO speak english so I mean its not like Roxma didnt have a point-I agree with him. I don think he was saying theyre fluent; in fact im positive he wasnt...HE just meant that even bits&pieces can be the difference between communication and confusion-

Supposedly we all began speaking one language. ;P But that's a religious thing, not proven fact. Buahaha.

I think English is already becoming a universal language. It has to be the most wlel-known aside from Chinese, but that's only because China has 1/3 of the world's population...

I read somewhere a short while ago that Chinese is the most spoken language, and English is the most internationally known. Cause remember, knowing a language doesn't necessarily mean you'll speak it at all.

    Ah, but music came first.

    Woo hoo! ^_^

haha, good one on 'ya! ^_^

So yes, I still think music should gain title of the universal language because it came first; in my mind, it's only just.
