every year people gather round to celebrate this holiday, when most people dont even know why the hell we celebrate it. christmas is supposed to celebrate the birth of jesus christ, now all people think about is what gifts they're going to buy/get or get invited/start a party.

i asked all the people in my 4 periods at my school and none of them knew anything about christmas, hell they didn't even know why we celebrate thanksgiving.

now you may think im speaking rubbish, but thats what i think, actually its not all of what i think, but i have a headache right now and want to wrap this up......leave comments -_-

True, that is why we celeberate christmas. Though people forget about that, and get obsessed by the presents. If anything this holiday creates, is sin. The christians must be proud about what their savior has done(no, I'm not christian, or any existing religion for that matter, I just know things)

And BTW, for the people wondering why you get presents, the presents come from two things, the three wisemen are one, and Saint Nick is another reason(not Santa Claus idiots), he wanted to spread the joy that the birth of christ gave him, so he left presents on people's doorsteps.

I think all holidays have been comericialized. Like you said, people think Christmas is all about the gifts nowadays. Even Easter has been turned into a day of sweets and presents when its suppose to be about Jesus' death on the cross, His resurrection, and His ascent to heaven. People can be so shallow sometimes...

I know what Christmas is, I just choose to not celebrate it like that. :p

I enjoy christmas as it is, the songs, carolers, the decorations... Just everything.

Like Rena88 said, all holidays have been commercialized, though Christmas is the most so. By the end of November I was already sick of Christmas because of all the commercials on TV, or functions at school, etc., etc., related to it. And people have forgotten what it really is celebrating... though I do not agree with the Bible or any of that.

Since I am not a Christian or any religion, I myself only celebrate "Christmas" because my entire family comes together during a time in which there is no work or school and we just spend the break with one another or visiting friends and family. As for the presents, well, those are just added incentive. I like receiving presents, but I don't like how overboard people can get with gift giving.

And to tell the truth, the lights, decorations, christmas trees, caroling, and all of that.... well, I really don't like it. People who you don't even know, or even neighbors who never bother to speak to you are all of a sudden being cheery and nice. It just seems so fake and hypocritical.

I know why we celebrate christmas, but it is not what I think about when I think Christmas. And me not being relgious is a factor in that. We are all subject to all the adverts.

But it does bring a good atmosphere overall, family coming together, having a laugh, all the decorations. It is true all people care about is the gifts, and in the future the true meaning will be forgotten, as people become less relgious.

It makes me very sad. I am religious, as many of you already know. As a tradition started by my baby sister, we sit around the navity scene that is the center of our Christmas decorations, set out the baby Jesus and sing to Him. That is our first priority on Christmas morning.

Personally, I think the reason that the true meaning of Christmas is becoming more and more hidden is, yes, the commercialization, but also the fact that any potential religious reminder of the true meaning is being forced from public places, because people are turning 'Freedom of religion' into 'Freedom from religion' to the point that some people can't even have crosses in their own front yards and the pledge of allegiance cannot be said in some schools.

But that is going onto a tangent. I'll stop before I get off topic.

I know you didn't, but I on the other hand don't mind whether we're celebrating it for Jesus, my gay band teacher, or the Smurfs. It holds a special place in my heart - one that brings out the memories of childhood in my heart. The decorations, songs, all of itt is just so amazing. I never think about Jesus during Christmas. Just all the fun I'm going to have during the 2 or so months it revolves around.

It's just to commercialised! I saw Christmas stuff in the shops here in September! I feel that Christmas has lost it's meaning. It's all parties, presents and no thought to what it all means. :(

I agree, people should know what Christmas is about, but I, personally don't look at it that way. In fact, I remember my Grandparents saying that it wasn't even Jesus's real birthday. But, we still sing Happy Birthday to him.

I look at Christmas as a time for family. My family rarely get together like we do on Chritmas, so it's nice. My mom is constantly working, and my father lives 20 minutes away and has to take care of his own failing bussiness. It's nice for the family to get together for just one day.

Christmas, as we know it, draws from many different practices from many different cultures.

It certainly was never originally a Jesus' Birth holiday, as most research puts him closer to a spring birthday. The Christians used Jesus' birth as an excuse to have a winter festival like the Pagans and others.

So everything that the Christians "know" about Christmas, and everything the avarage consumer "knows" about Christmas, is way off.

Be that as it may, though I myself am Jewish, I love the underlying meaning that we as a culture seem to have given Christmas and the holiday season: Peace on Earth, and Good Will Towards Men. The one time of year where we have to stop thinking about ourselves, and start caring about everyone else. As long as that's in people's hearts, who cares where the traditions started or that there's a lot of commercialization? Not me.

    Not me.

That's the world anymore. People put aside religion and all those other sweets for presents/whatever the hell they want.

    It's called greediness, my friend.

As some have already said, Christmas is NOT the birth of jesus Christ, if he did exist. The Bible says that there were farm animals in the fields. It's cold in the winter, so the shephards did not put their animals out. If he was born, it was in the spring.

As for my feelings for Christmas, I celebrate it, despite being atheist. I see it as a holiday for families and friends to come together and forget all their worries and express their love and affection. It really gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling inside... or is that gas?

People always forget, but you just have to remind them. Jesus would probablty be happy that we are celebrating his birthday in our own way. But I can't speak for him, nobody will forget of what he's done for us though.
