Isn't this entire idea based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends on 2012? If so, then I believe there are two problems with this idea:

    1) The Mayans died out a long time ago, ergo, we may deduce: that since they died out, how do we know that this date is even accurate?

    2) The world uses the Gregorian calendar; the Mayans did not. So their year of 2012 would actually be different from our year of 2012.

True, but my point is it wasn't just the Mayans. There were several civilizations/cultures that had the end date pointing at a day during the winter solstice in 2012.

Well...not to sound bigoted, but I seriously don't think the world will end in 2012. I mean, wasn't everyone saying that 2000 would be the end? That never happened. Humanity is a species that knows it will die one day, I think that's why we like to predict our doom so much (I don't believe we could actually end the world along with ourselves).

The world will not end in 2012, that's far too early. Though, because the sun is a star, it will eventually supernova, at which point life on Earth will cease to exist.

The sun is a star, but a way to small star to end in a supernova, only the biggest stars can become a supernova.
The sun will expand lots of time bigger, swallowing the earth and then shrink en fade away.

    No sun = no life.

But that's probably over 4.500.000.000 years. By then humans doens't exist anymore. I think humans will survives a couple of centuraries, but if we continue destroying our planet we won't survive.

Anyway... I don't care. If we indeed are gonna to die, then there is no way to change that fate. Just bad luck.

    The Sun WILL Supernova.

In about 5 billion years, it will keep on growing, and growing, and growing, and melt us all if we haven't died of Global Warming yet.

The sun will indeed do such things, but that isn't called supernova. Supernova is the most intensive reaction that exist. It would fade away Mercurius to Pluto. But our sun is a 'small' star and will only have a normal nova. It can't do supernovas. Only the biggest stars can do supernovas.

Anyway, after the nova thingie the sun will melt our planet and then fade away. Funny isn't it?

Crap, I voted before I really read the question... -_-'

Anyways... I do think the earth will end... Eventually. But not on that particular date. -_-'

Um... My religion says that the earth will be destroyed... But even from a scientific point of view, we're still pretty much screwed.

Like what other people said before... Eventually the sun will move on to its next stage and become a red giant. Key word there is GIANT. It's gonna inflate like a huge baloon and swallow Earth, along with a few other planets, and... Well... Goodbye, Earth.

    OR...

Earth's core will cool off and the little magnetic field will fade away exposing earth to all kinds of harmful cosmic radiation. I guess that EARTH itself won't end, BUT, we'd all pretty much be dead. =3

And then again, there's always that chance that some idiot nation will start a nuclear war, which would end in nuclear winter, which would, again, kill us all; not mentioning the fact that some random comet can crash into us and we'd never see the light of day again... And Global Warming...

So, yeah. It's pretty much unavoidable that the world is gonna end one day. I just don't think it'll be that particular day.

    But who knows...?

    It may be...

We can never be too sure though...

Global warming can kill us... (most realistic :P)
    Supernova (takes too long)
    Radiation (oooooh)
    Super Volcano? (nah)

Nah!! We will never die too soon...

    What about the comet thing?

    Or nuclear Winter?

Those things are pretty realistic, too.

P.S., Don't dis da radiation... >3 Where do ya think we get nuclear weapons from, anyway? (Um... Not from space, if you kinda interpretted the question wrong... XD; )

Oh yeah, and the sun can't supernova like we've said before... -_-' It's too small.

Exactly... People claim that they know "Oh, the world will end right here! *le gasp*" all the time and most of the time they "base" it on religion (making the people who believe in that religion appear completely ******ed in the process, might I add. >.>) but it even says in the Bible that there's only one person who truely knows THE Dooms Day.

    ..............

sorry... had to throw that out there. >.>'

Well maybe a asteroid or something will happen, but the Catholic church says that it is impossible to predict the "Apocolypse". But Yeah this is probably as possible as the 666 date or Y2K and thats not saying much.

Get real! It'll really be a bummer for me to die one year after I graduate from high school... Then I won't get a chance to enjoy life to the fullest! 2012 is far too much of an early date to end life. How 'bout a 2099?

the y2k thing was a load of bull. of coarse the computers were ready for the new milenium. there are people that get paid to make sure of this.

that 6/6/06 was more bull. if anything it should have been in the year 6. ya know, 6/6/6 because this is actually 666 not 6606.

i digress. i have heard the same thinng on multiple occasions. what are the odds that 2 or the ancient civilizations with absolutely no contact to each other could come up with the exact same date. do i believe tht the world will end? no, but the odds are overwhelming. but truly i think we have the technolgy to see it coming

skellingtondan you have avery good point. But we never know when stuff like armageddon is going to happen that would take the whole point of learning ot of every thing. War, tarror, death. There are many problems no one can see and even if we can see them coming how can we prepare no army on Earth can kill demons or what ever is going to be at armageddon we just can't.

Before I continue, I'd just like to establish one little thing here.
The Sun cannot supernova. It will expand. It will nova. It's impossible for it to supernova and become a black hole or white dwarf.

Anyway. The most likely "doomsday" cause will be either a meteor or the death of the Sun. Meteor=Possibly any time, Sun's death=some trillion years.
