Fast Food Madness: The Epic Return V2

Think, Kairi. Think! "Um..." she started hesitantly. She could tell Sora was obviously concerned now, able to hear it in his voice. "I keep hearing noises. I think somebody's trying to break in." Kairi squeezed her eyes closed once she said it, hating to lie to him. But she knew it was the only way to get Sora over here, if anything.

 

Sora immediately turned his head in the direction of Kairi's home, the brunet walking quickly in that direction. "Go to your room; I'll be there in a few minutes." His protective instinct was kicking in, forcing himself to put his own emotions behind him in favor of Kairi's safety. He was her protector, and he wouldn't fail her.

 

"I'm already in here," Kairi said, at the same time looking down at her bed. She felt bad for doing this, but it seemed like the only way. She knew she was going to have explaining to do once he got here, but she was already prepared for that. Kairi just hoped Sora wouldn't get too upset with her.

 

Sora crossed the street, traffic not heavy enough to hinder him. "Are the lights out? The door shut?" He needed to take the necessary steps to keep her safe until he could get there. But...who would be dumb enough to break into somebody's home in the middle of the day? He thought it was bizarre, but he didn't question it. He would have his answer soon enough.

 

"Yes," Kairi said, to both. She didn't usually keep the lights on during the day, and she always kept the doors shut and locked because Sora requested it for her safety. That is, if he was talking about the front door and back door, but her bedroom door was shut too.

 

"'Kay," Sora said, glad to hear it. Unfortunately, though, those were the only things he could have her do until he got there. "I'm on your block now. I'm going to hang up and check around the house. Stay where you are." Once he made sure things were clear (or not), then he would use the key she kept hidden outside to allow himself in.

 

Kairi nodded, despite the fact Sora couldn't see. "Okay," she said, the guilt already rising more within her. It had come up when she realized having Roxas talk to him was a mistake, but now it was even worse. She had to lure him here using a threat, and Kairi never wanted to do that. Ever.

 

Sora snapped his phone shut and stuffed it into his pocket, seeing Kairi's home coming up. He slowed his fast walk once he reached the house, the teen listening for any noise. It was hard to isolate anything coming from right by the house though; they were in a city, and even if this part wasn't overly noisy, he could still hear noise. He would have to walk around and see. He clenched his hands in light fists, walking around and keeping a sharp eye for anything suspicious.

 

Kairi hung up and set her phone down on her bed, sighing softly. She lowered her eyes to the pictures spread out before her, and she looked at them blankly. Her thoughts were capturing her attention for now. She felt terrible for what she was doing to Sora, making him think and do. He was trying to protect her, when she lied about a threat. Kairi felt bad about it, but it was the only way to get him here; she had to remember that.

 

In a matter of minutes, Sora searched Kairi's property, and not once did he sense any dark presence. If somebody had been there, then they were long gone. He approached Kairi's door now, the spare key in his hand. He unlocked the front door and let himself in, positive that there was no threat. "Kairi?" he called, shutting the door behind him and locking it out of habit. It was alright for her to come down; she was safe.

 

Kairi heard Sora and got off her bed, walking to her bedroom door and opening it before stepping out. She walked down the hall and then turned the corner to reach the steps. From the top she could see the front door, and there she saw Sora. The girl bit her lip lightly, putting her hand on the banister as she started to descend.

 

Sora set the spare key on a table by the door, the brunet planning on putting it back later. First, he would have to talk to Kairi some more about whatever it was she heard outside. When he swept over everything, he hadn't seen signs of anyone being present--no broken twigs, no footsteps, no nothing.

 

Kairi didn't say anything as she descended the steps from the second floor to the first, the girl having her head down slightly. She glanced up at Sora once she reached the bottom, still nibbling on her lip. What was she going to say?

 

"I didn't see anything outside," Sora said, tilting his head to the side slightly when he noticed Kairi not really looking at him. "What exactly did you hear?" It was possible that a gust of wind blew something up against the house, but he was a little surprised that Kairi would be that paranoid.

 

Kairi stopped at the bottom step, nervously pressing her fingertips together in front of her. What did she hear? She would tell him, and it would be the truth. "Um...a few minutes ago, I heard somebody very close to me telling their best friend that they had a near-death experience while they were away," she said softly, glancing up at Sora with her periwinkle eyes.

 

Sora felt his eyes widen a small bit, though he was very confused at what Kairi just said. "I...don't understand what you're trying to say," he said to her, encouraging her to elaborate. Though he didn't specifically understand what she just said, he was aware that his heart was beating at an irregular pace now.

 

Kairi lowered her eyes to her hands, taking in a breath. "...I lied," she admitted softly, not lifting her eyes again to meet his gaze. She didn't want to look at him when she confessed what was really going on. "There weren't any noises... Nobody was trying to break in." It was all a lie to get you here, she thought, guilt heavy in her heart.

 

Sora brought a hand to his forehead, lowering his head and shutting his eyes as he heavily exhaled a breath. Kairi...hadn't been in danger in the first place. "Don't...scare me like that!" he said, his previous concern coming through in his voice. He didn't know what he would do without Kairi around. Plus, he was officially her protector; he couldn't allow anything to happen to her.

 

Kairi closed her eyes at Sora's higher tone, though she could hear how heavily concerned he had been. "I'm sorry," she said sadly. However, she felt that wasn't going to be enough to cover what she'd done. She knew it wasn't.

 

Sora exhaled another breath, opening his eyes after a moment to look at the girl a little bit in front of him. "Why were you so desperate to have me come over that you had to lie about your safety?" he asked, curiosity present in his voice. It was unlike Kairi to lie about something that large, but then again, he had been away several months. Perhaps things had changed more deeply than he had previously suspected.
