Fast Food Madness: The Epic Return V2

Kairi continued to sit there, trying to think of something to say. She searched her mind for any questions she had come up with ever since he left, and since he came back. But there were so many... She just needed to pick one, but she didn't want to start things off on the wrong foot; she couldn't handle another problem.

 

However, no matter how badly he wanted to ignore his pain, Sora couldn't tune it out completely. He furrowed his brows, lowering his head and bringing up his hands, interlinking his fingers behind his head. He felt completely awful, and the silence was only bringing out his physical pain that much more.

 

Kairi caught movement out of the corner of her eye, which distracted her from her thoughts. She turned her head to look at Sora more and saw his position, realizing that he had just as hard of a night as she did yesterday. She opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it. What was she supposed to say? The girl bit her lip, deciding that everything would probably be easier if Sora wasn't in pain. "Um... Stay here," Kairi said softly, pushing herself up from the couch and starting to exit the living room.

 

Sora looked up when Kairi left, but he didn't question it. He lowered his head again, gritting his teeth together. It felt like a drum was beating inside his head, and it was very painful. As badly as he wished he could set aside the pain and focus on Kairi, it was impossible.

 

Kairi left the living room and went down the hallway, turning when she reached the bathroom. She opened the medicine cabinet and grabbed some painkillers, but she didn't grab a glass of water right away. From previous experiences, she knew Sora never used it to help him with the pills. However, she thought it would be courteous to grab one anyway, so she did, right before she headed back for the living room.

 

Sora stayed in his position, keeping his eyes shut. The pain was making him dizzy, just like it had earlier before he passed out. He exhaled a heavy breath at that realization, frustration in his heart. He couldn't pass out again; Kairi needed him. He wouldn't abandon her, not again.

 

Kairi entered the living room once again, seeing immediately that Sora was in the same position she had left him in. She approached him silently, the painkillers in one hand and the glass of water in the other. The redhead stopped next to him and quietly reached forward with the hand that was formed in a fist to hold the pills. She tapped Sora on the shoulder lightly with one finger before pulling back, her eyes on him.

 

Sora relaxed his expression, taking only one second to wipe away some of the pain on his face before he lowered his hands from behind his head and looked up, seeing Kairi standing with a glass of water and something in her fist. He blinked, realizing that she must have seen that he still wasn't feeling too good.

 

Kairi wordlessly moved her enclosed fist toward Sora and opened her hand, offering him the two pills that were resting on her palm. It was best to relieve what pain was worse, and that was Sora's. Hers would have to wait.

 

Sora reached up a hand immediately, taking the pills out of Kairi's hand while his other hand moved to take the water. "Thank you," he said softly, grateful and sorry at the same time. He was grateful Kairi offered him some medicine without him asking, but he was sorry that he couldn't fully devote himself to caring for her. She deserved better from him.

 

Kairi nodded at the boy in front of her and moved to sit back down beside him once he took the items from her hands. She lowered herself to the couch, tucking some of her hair behind her ear and moving her bangs out of her eyes. However, she focused forward, giving Sora his privacy as he took care of himself.

 

Sora popped one pill in his mouth and then used the water to help him swallow, the teen not used to taking medicine any more. He then did the same with the second pill, drinking a few sips of water to get it down. Once that was finished, he set the glass on the table beside him, the teen hoping that the pills would work quickly.

 

Kairi's hands fumbled with the ties on her lounge pants, and she watched them in the silence. She knew that she was the one that needed to start the conversation, since she wanted to talk in the first place. But she really was unsure of what to say. Sora had gone through a lot, and so had she. Kairi didn't want to make things worse.

 

Sora leaned back into the couch, his hands in loose fists in his lap as he looked forward. He wasn't sure if Kairi was worrying about his physical condition or trying to figure out what she wanted to talk about, so he felt it was necessary to give her a little encouragement. "...We both have a lot of unspoken things between us, don't we?" he asked softly, his bright blue eyes going down to the floor when he said that.

 

Kairi pressed her lips together at the words, nodding slightly. "Yes. Unfortunately, we do," she confirmed, her voice soft in the quiet living room. She wasn't sure what emotion was coming through in Sora's voice, or her own, and she didn't want to bother thinking about it. Kairi wanted to forget a lot of things that happened, but she knew that in order to do that, she had to overcome them. She didn't want to do that either, but she knew she had to.

 

Sora shut his eyes for a second before opening them again, hearing Kairi's words. He didn't know where to start. He felt like they should talk about things from the very start, but he also felt like he needed to tell her something right away. And he was about to do just that. "You know," he started softly, "I'm not mad at you for finding somebody else. I know that four months was a long time to be waiting around for me to return."

 

"Maybe," Kairi started softly, "but I've waited a year before." She knew she had broken a very special bond with Sora by giving Nathaniel her heart, and it hurt her deeply to recognize that. And to realize a few other things. "I...betrayed you, Sora. I betrayed your trust and loyalty. I hurt you, and...Nathaniel hurt me," she continued, realizing how hard it was to speak his name. "A broken heart for a broken heart..."

 

"Don't...talk like that," Sora said, having trouble saying that. He hadn't meant to cause Kairi to speak heartbroken words like that; he had only been meaning to give her reassurance that he wasn't angry. "You didn't mean to hurt me like he hurt you so please...don't think that way." He knew what he was feeling in his heart, but he wasn't sure if it was coming through in his words; it had been a long time since he had a deep conversation with somebody.

 

Kairi didn't say anything after that, pressing her lips together to try and keep back her emotions. Sora was so willing to dismiss it, but she wasn't; she had done a terrible thing, but then again, she had been tricked into it... No. There was no excuse. She went into that relationship with her own free will; there was no reason to pin her betrayal on that.

 

"You can't really believe that this works out fairly in the end," Sora said, elaborating on what he was trying to say earlier. "He...He was awful to you." He had a hard time trying to phrase it that simply, the teen wanting to say much worse things about Nathaniel. However, he feared that would upset Kairi, so he kept it to himself.
