Fast Food Madness: The Epic Return

Namine looked down at the icepack, not making a move to reach out for it. She lifted her eyes to Roxas after a moment, confusion in her eyes. "Isn't it already really cold in here?" she asked, recalling how cold she had been all day. She had earlier attributed it to her cold, but she had forgotten and now figured that the heat just wasn't working right in her home, or something of the sort.

 

Roxas gazed at Namine, his eyes turning sad as he shook his head. "No, Nam, it's not," he admitted softly, his voice showing his growing worry for her. He was right; she was cold and hot at the same time. That wasn't good at all.

 

Namine blinked in surprise, starting to realize what that meant. Having a fever and being freezing cold at the same time probably wasn't a good combination. "...Oh," she said, looking down at the icepack to avoid Roxas' concerned eyes. Obviously she was even more sick than she thought, and that wasn't a good thing at all.

 

Roxas had an idea of what Namine's eyes were resting on, and he pushed it closer to her slightly, still holding it out to her. He wanted her to take it so she could get rid of her fever. If she would lie down as well, maybe they could hit two birds with one stone and get rid of her chills.

 

Namine saw Roxas bring the item closer to her and she unfolded her arms, taking the icepack before she could convince herself not to hold onto the cold item. She fought the urge to shiver as she lifted it to her forehead, placing it against her head as she shut her eyes.

 

"You should probably lie down too. The pill should be kicking in soon," Roxas stated, remembering that she had taken it only moments ago. He looked at Namine's alarm clock, the time reading 1:37 a.m. She needed rest, and so did he. He'd been awake for a while, but he was so busy with Namine that he had forgotten about his own exhaustion.

 

Namine nodded faintly in recognition and silently complied, laying down on her bed. The covers were folded back slightly, and she immediately wished she would have pulled them up a bit before she was lying down. Roxas sure was right about that pill; she was already feeling like she could pass out.

 

Roxas pushed himself up from his squatting position and moved to pull Namine's covers up, pulling them out from under her legs. He silently tugged them up to her stomach before looking down at her. She looked miserable, and it was evident that she was. He wished there was more he could do to help her, but he wasn't sure what.

 

Namine reached down with her free hand and pulled the sheets up further, shivering faintly. "Thanks," she mumbled tiredly, her eyes falling shut. She tried to keep the icepack to her head, aware that once she fell asleep, there were no guarantees that it would stay there. She wanted it there as long as possible, so that maybe she could get rid of this stupid fever.

 

Roxas grunted a response, which was meant to translate into "you're welcome". He leaned up and straightened, looking down at Namine. "I'll stay over for the night," he said, thinking of how late and cold it was. "So I'll let you get your rest. If you need anything, I'll be out in the living room, okay?" Roxas wasn't sure what else he could do from here except let her body recover on its own. Telling her that he was staying was what he figured would be the best he could do for now.

 

"Okay," Namine muttered, unable to open her eyes because of how tired she suddenly was. She really wished she could see Roxas one more time before she fell asleep once again, but she knew that wasn't possible. Or maybe she could have some other recognition that he was with her; it was still a bit hard to believe, considering that he had just recently returned home.

 

Roxas looked down at Namine's hand closest to him that was resting on the bed, and he moved his hand a little towards it, his fingers brushing over hers slightly before he pulled back. "I'll see you in the morning," he promised, his blue eyes finding her face again.

 

Namine's tired heart skipped a beat at Roxas' touch, and she finally found the strength to open her eyes. "I love you," she said softly, the words showing her tiredness. But she was strangely pleased beneath her fever; she had still gotten a chance to let Roxas know what she was feeling.

 

Roxas smiled slightly, but it wasn't only one of happiness. "I love you too," he told her gently, his voice quiet in the room. His smile began to fade as he walked around the bed and back toward the bedroom door. He approached it and grabbed the knob before looking over his shoulder at Namine once more. His small smile disappeared completely as he shut off her light and shut the door. As he traveled down the dark hallway, he took the moment to acknowledge that his smile hadn't been just happiness at her words. It had also been sadness.

 

Namine shut her eyes as soon as the lights went out, hearing some thunder outside. That was the last thing she comprehended before she fell unconscious, slumber taking over her.

 

Roxas ran his hands through his hair as he entered the living room, the boy walking up to the couch and collapsing on it. He leaned his head back against the couch and sighed, both in exhaustion and frustration. What was he going to do? Everything he had learned recently was seriously affecting his relationship with Namine. It was just making things more difficult. Regardless, the boy knew he had to deal with it, because there was no way out. Roxas had to face his problems, and if that meant lying to Namine, he would do it. It was for the best.

 

Namine rolled over in her sleep, accidentally releasing her grip on the icepack. It rested behind her head on the pillow now, not in contact with her skin any longer.

 

Roxas exhaled heavily and picked up the remote on the arm of the couch next to him. He turned the television on, hoping it would distract him. TV was good at that, just like fighting the Heartless. That had distracted him for a long time.

Namine rolled over restlessly in her sleep, a heavy breath leaving her as she furrowed her eyebrows. She was having an unpleasant dream, about certain things that she wished could have been forgotten. Of course, she couldn't forget about the past, not when it affected her so greatly.

 

Roxas found himself in Namine's room again, scanning the drawings on her walls. It was the early hours in the morning, but he hadn't been able to sleep. He was still trying to get used to his whole thing, being back and away from all the danger. Roxas couldn't deny that he was still on edge, which was why he was trying to keep himself busy. Being up on his feet was enough for now.
