Fast Food Madness: The Epic Return

Namine lowered her arm, letting both her hands sit in her lap. She hadn't completed her last thought, and she couldn't figure out why not. But then she realized why she wouldn't finish the sentence. She forced herself to finish it now. I want to be with him, but not like this. Being closer to him could make him more worried about me, or it could hurt him if I act differently than I did before. She bit down lightly on her lip, eyes opening a crack. I don't want to hurt him...

 

Roxas's pace slowed as he approached the blonde girl, stopping a few feet behind her. "Namine?" he called softly, looking down at her. By her posture, something seemed wrong. The fact that she ran out of the cafe supported that thought.

 

Namine opened her eyes fully, turning to look at the boy behind her. Roxas, she thought sadly. I'm sorry... "I'm alright," she said softly, that being the only thing she could think to say. It was obvious, though, that she wasn't alright. And Roxas surely would know that.

 

Roxas tilted his head to the side slightly, his expression becoming sad. She was lying... He knew that she was... Maybe he shouldn't have sung that song. Maybe it was too much for her.

 

Namine exhaled silently, eyes flickering shut for a moment. Tell him the truth, she told herself. He can handle it. She opened her light blue eyes again and looked up at Roxas. "I...your song, reminded me of something," she confessed softly.

 

Roxas blinked, taking that in. "It did?" he asked softly. He took a few steps forward, eyes falling to the ground as he seated himself down beside Namine. He turned his head to look at her, eyes full of wonder and confusion.

 

Namine nodded faintly, her eyes looking down. The memory itself, however sweet it was, wasn't really what impacted her. It was all of the things she knew about Roxas connecting together that really hit her hard. "We were really close before, weren't we?" she asked softly, though she already knew the answer. She just had a small glimpse of the truth, but it was enough to make her head spin and her heart skip a beat.

 

Roxas didn't answer right away, the question impacting him harder than he thought. He turned his head and looked down at the water. "...Yeah, we were," he finally said, his voice soft. There's that past tense, the voice within him said. Roxas bit his lip slightly.

 

Namine turned her head, looking down at the water. "I'm sorry," she said softly, hearing the sadness in Roxas' voice.

 

Roxas kept his gaze on the shining water. "It's alright," he said softly. The most he was thankful for right now was that Namine was alive after what happened. If he wasn't involved with her life...maybe it was for the best. But because he was, things didn't seem to get easier for her.

 

Namine shook her head slightly. "No, it's not alright," she said softly. "This isn't fair. I don't remember you very much, but what I feel for you doesn't reflect that at all," she blurted. She felt like...dare she admit it to herself? She felt like she loved him. No, it seemed like the word "love" was an understatement here. But there were no other words to describe her feelings.

 

Roxas pressed his lips together, the first few words blocking out the last, most significant part of her sentence. She didn't remember him...of course she didn't. "You're right... This isn't fair at all," he finally admitted. "It's upsetting. Frustrating, too..." He was angered by all this, and things had been going okay for a while. But Roxas knew that they weren't anymore...or they never really had been. He didn't want to take his built-up emotions out on Namine, so he made himself quiet down.

 

Namine bit down on her lip, leaning forward with her elbows on her legs. She brought her hands to her head, forcing her eyes shut so she wouldn't cry again. After all, hadn't she damaged and worried her friends enough for one day? Had Roxas picked up on what she just said? She doubt it, he seemed pretty upset now...

 

Roxas closed his eyes when he saw the way Namine positioned herself. "I'm probably not helping..." he said softly, sitting cross-legged on the grass. His elbows were resting on his thighs, the boy's posture poor as this whole thing was starting to take a toll on him. What was he thinking singing that song? It obviously didn't help a thing--it made things even worse. Look at Namine, now... He had been too forward...

 

Namine lowered her hands, folding them in front of her as she forced her eyes open. "No," she said, disagreeing. "Right now, I need somebody to be honest with me like you are." She swallowed, eyes wandering to the water in front of her. Not only did she need that, but she needed Roxas because of what he meant to her. The memories may have been gone, but her feelings were still there.

 

Roxas opened his eyes, sadly looking down at his lap. "Honesty isn't always relieving, though," he told Namine softly. "...And the last thing I want to do is hurt your feelings." He guessed he was past that point, because he was already doing that, wasn't he?

 

Namine shook her head again. "Life isn't all good...I may not know specifics but I know that's true," she said softly. "And besides...aren't I the one hurting you by not remembering what really matters?" She looked down at the water, seeing the reflections of white clouds hovering above them in the sky.

 

Roxas turned his head to the look at the girl, sadness written all over his features. After a short moment his sight fell back on the water right in front of him, the boy quiet for a few seconds. Yeah, it was hurting him that she couldn't remember him, but it wasn't like she could control what happened to her. "...It's not your fault," he said simply, hoping she would understand what he meant, and that this memory loss wasn't something she could really take the fault for.

 

"That doesn't change that I'm hurting you," Namine said softly. Roxas meant well, but they both knew that what Namine said was true. There was no use denying it. What Namine really wanted to do...was hold onto Roxas. And never let go. That's what her heart told her to do, but her body refused to comply.

 

Roxas swallowed, feeling his emotions begin to take control of him. One of his hands curled into a fist...in aggravation, anger, sadness, and heartache. All of this was very unfair, to the both of them. More-so Namine than himself. Roxas closed his eyes, exhaling silently.
