Fast Food Madness: The Epic Return

"Kairi," Sora heard himself say. But he hadn't actually said it; it was the darkness controlling him. But...it sounded just like him! Kairi wouldn't be able to tell that anything happened. The next thing he knew, he was embracing Kairi, and she was embracing him back.

Kairi, Kairi! he tried to cry out, but it was no use. She couldn't hear him...couldn't tell that anything was wrong. There was absolutely no way for him to connect with her, not with the darkness reigning in his heart.

And then Dark Sora moved to kiss her, only an inch away from her lips--

"No!" Sora shouted, bringing himself out of the nightmare. He gasped and bolted upright, covered in sweat. He instinctively brought a fist to his heart, trying to come to terms that everything was only a terrible nightmare. He was still in control...he always would be.

 

Kairi smiled slightly in her sleep, at the occuring dream in her mind. She was dreaming of the times over the spring that she had spent with her friends in the park. They had always been glorious days, and in her dreams they were just as precious.

 

Sora gasped, shutting his eyes tightly. Only a dream...only a dream....he kept telling himself, trying to calm down. His eyes immediately reopened when he remembered who else was in his dream--Kairi. He needed to make sure she was alright; it didn't matter if it was 2 in the morning. He reached over to take his cell phone off the end table, speed-dialing Kairi with shaky hands.

 

A ring sounded throughout the redhead's bedroom, and Kairi turned over groggily in her sleep toward her bedside table. She rolled over onto her other side as the ring continued, the girl reaching for her phone. She picked it up and read the ID, noting it was Sora. What...? "Hello?" she said tiredly into the receiver, still not fully awake.

 

"Kai?" Sora said without thought, holding the phone tightly against his ear. She sounded alright to him...just tired. And then he remembered that normal people were asleep at this time in the morning. He shut his eyes tightly, mentally scolding himself for not even thinking of what to say to her. Obviously he wouldn't tell her about the dream--he couldn't bring himself to worry her like that.

 

"Sora?" Kairi replied softly, rubbing her eye. "Why are you calling so early?" Her eyes darted to her alarm clock, noting it was a little after two in the morning. "Is everything alright?" she asked, staring at her bedsheets. The thought of something being wrong woke her a little more, but his voice--even through just her name--made her question it. Of course, she was too tired to comprehend very much.

 

Sora brought hand to his head, feeling bad about waking her up. "Sorry I woke you," he started softly. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay." His voice had a bit of worry in it, but it was mostly gentle. Sora was in control of himself again, and he forced his voice to remain calm.

 

Kairi smiled weakly, and tiredly. "I'm fine," she replied gently, sensing something in Sora's voice. She didn't question it, though, knowing how late (or early) it was. He was checking up on her, and she felt grateful that he cared so much, even when she didn't know what was going on.

 

Sora exhaled a soft breath in relief, his eyes shutting in relief and shame. Relief because she was alright, and shame because he had awoken her for no reason. "Sorry for waking you," he said again. "You can go back to sleep now," he said gently. "Sorry."

 

Kairi shook her head as she kept herself propped up on her pillow, her elbow supporting her. "Don't be sorry, Sora," she insisted. "I appreciate you checking on me. Thank you." She smiled slightly, happy to hear his voice even if it was early in the morning.

 

Sora smiled weakly at Kairi's attempt to make him feel better. He still felt bad, but he was grateful she wasn't asking any questions. "I'll see you later?" he asked softly, referring to their plans to go to the pool. He was closer to the pool than Kairi, so she would be coming to his house and then they'd meet Roxas and Namine there. That was what they had agreed to when they spoke to Roxas earlier that day--no, yesterday.

 

Kairi smiled a little more, though Sora couldn't see it. "Sure," she said softly into the phone. "Goodnight." Or good morning; either way, she was going to go back to sleep, and hopefully Sora would too.

 

"Goodnight," Sora responded softly into the phone. After a moment he ended the call, his phone going back onto the end table. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, knowing that he wouldn't be going back to sleep again anytime soon. But at least Kairi was alright--he was extremely grateful that. And his darkness was under his control. He would never be a slave to it; he knew it.

 

Kairi flipped her phone shut and set it back down on the endtable. She then relaxed into her bed, pulling the covers closer to her as she buried her head into her pillow, still sleepy. In a matter of minutes, she left consciousness once more, meeting her dream she had disappeared from for the last few minutes.

 

Sora stayed up for a few more hours, getting a midnight snack, watching some television, and then just laying in bed for a while before he fell back into a dreamless slumber.

Kairi descended the stairs in her home, heading staight for the front door. She had on jean shorts and flip flops, and a grey tank top. Underneath, she wore her bathing suit, knowing what was in store for today. She was actually pretty excited, not having been to the pool in a while. As she grabbed the bag she had already set out with all her essentials, such as sunscreen, a towel and an extra change in clothes in case something unexpected occured, she stuck her phone in her back pocket and opened the door. Kairi stepped out into the world, feeling the light breeze blow her hair slightly. She left her porch after locking the door and brought her sunglasses over her eyes, blocking the bright sunlight.

 

Even though he hadn't gotten a full night's rest, Sora felt well enough to go out for the day. He was thankful that no more dreams had haunted him while he was asleep, and so he was sure he could pull off not worrying his friends today. He had just finished eating, and now he was going to go get changed quick before Kairi got to his house.

 

Kairi carried her bag over her shoulder, holding the strap as she walked along the sidewalk. She didn't have very far to go; thankfully everyone lived within walking distance from each other. She hummed a small tune as she took in the beautiful day, on her way to Sora's.

 

After a few minutes, Sora was all set. He had on his swim trunks and a T-shirt that he would keep on for the walk there. And his towel was by the doorway, ready to be grabbed as soon as he was going to head out the door.

 

Kairi was almost to Sora's house, able to see it within view just a few yards ahead. She had enjoyed the walk over, absorbing the sun and the heat it brought along with it. She could feel herself sweating as she approached Sora's walkway, the warmth of the day affecting her already. A dip in the pool was definitely going to be enjoyable today.
