If you look closely you'll see that he actually still had some Sprite in the fridge.
This adds a whole new layer of depth to the comic...

 

Obviously the character in the panel is denying the truth. I agree, it does make the comic deeper, in that it questions reality. What if we all had sprite in our refrigerators but chose not to see them?

We are all living in the matrix.
