First off, I know there was a thread about this before, but I didnt want to bump it.

Most people say goth is just a style of clothing, I personally think its a state of mind. Also Emo literally is just a short way of saying emotional, it doesnt necessairaly(sp?) mean you slash yourself. For me, I find goth girls attractive.

Well, goth's were around a long time ago, and were very elegant I believe....
And emo's.... well..... I just think of them being a LOT over dramatic....
And I made you a siggeh.

Well the term is normally for the fashion and music taste, for both Goth and Emo, though that does bring in sterotypes which cause to give that image a personality. Like the whole emo and cutting yourself (which rarely happens). The thing that annoys me the most about emo is the fact it is used as an insult these day. Like my sister, people class her as emo by her music taste and fashion sense, fair enough, in that terms yes she is emo. But random chavs, shout at her and say "EMO" in a way to offend the person. So what that is her style and what she wants to wear. I think it's unfair that it's used an in insult. This is ultimately given some bands unneeded critism and bad rep, bands like My Chemical Romance, Panic! and Fall Out Boy all being classed as emo, and are being slatered by pretty much everyone. Do these bands say they are emo? No. So why should they go through such abuse. I remember reading a review of MCR's single, Welcome to the Black Parade, and the guy gave them critism for being emo (and the song isn't even emo) that is just not right.

Well you can be Emo without all the clothes and music right? i can't wear emo clothes cuz at my school there's a dresscode and i can't buy any cuz if i did my mom would freak out. I also think Goth or emo is a state of mind, since you could act that way sometimes and not lookit (like me)

*coughs* I'd hate to explain this again, but it seems I might have to.

    People have it all wrong.

Goth and Emo are steryotypes. They are labels that are made by teenagers so they can understand those people better.

Emo came from a type of music called emotive, or emo or short. They useually sing about break ups in relationships or wanting to die, so that's why they called t that. It's not a REAL steryotype because it's a kind of music, not people.

Goth on the other hand, was a group of people from the dark ages. They most likely got the word goth from how it was so dark and how goths wear dark colours.

Emo, prep, jock, nerd or Goth, it's all decided on what they do, and how they dress, mostly how they dress.

I myself go as a goth at my school and I get labeled 'gothic' 'emo' 'creepy' or 'weird' all the time. What most people think that goths worship Satan, which is totally incorrect. I'm athiest and don't live by any religon. Another thing is, is that they are creepy and hex everyone who does something bad to them, again it's wrong. As y'all know, I am one hyper of a person, and it'd be strange for you to see me like that, right? All the other 'goths' at my school are just like me.

Emo (slang): a slang term used to describe a wide range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music.

No matter what way you put it, it all means the same thing. And yes Hissora I agree, pretty much all Goths and Emos I know are all the same pretty much, they are all generally happy people who have a good time. But hey what steorotype is actually right.

Well Emo is more like a branch of Goth. They stole the style (Sorta, only with tighter clothing), and basically inserted overly emotional-aspects.

To me, I think emo-girls are very attractive. However I do always find my share of non-emo girls who are far more attractive...in which case all my friends are emo, btw. xD

Anyway, goth and emo are merely a form of rebellion. They are a form of social caste that revolves around different taste, and most of them find a way to make things appear differently in their minds. Like Emo's think most things are a lot worse than they might be. Or Goth's might find them to be merely a happening they could really care less about, when it's actually more important.

Well moreover...they are just stereotypes. Like Hissora said...it's the way they are seen and not EVER shown by who they actually are. And mostly revolves around how they wear their clothing. Color, technique, costume, etc...

There was a case I heard of that a woman working at Macdonald's was goth (black everything clothes, make-up, and accessories). And the manager said that she would have to stop dressing that way because it "Did not fit the Macdonald's image." And she replied by lodging a complaint that said that they were impeding her "freedom of religion."

From what I hear "goth" is not really a religion, so was her claim B.S.?

    Well it was her belief.

And if she can't work there looking even remotely the way she wants, or feels comfortable with, then no one should. =/

kablam! hehe you just got hit with a sticky note!

anywazies several things have made it where these stereotypes have identified themselves as living things essentially becomeing whoever is splattered with said stereotype

ex. someone is constantly made fun of for being emo when they arent trying to be its just because ppl are making fun of them that they take such a bleak look on life the dark clothing is an outward representatation of that

in the case of goth they take on a hard as rock cant hurt my emotions outlook in order to fend off any further humiliation since ppl become tired of making fun of someone who no longer responds to said stimuli

To me, it's social ignorance for many to categorize 'Goths' as they have been in the media. The original 'Goths' were a Germanic tribe who were at their most violent and maurauding at the time the Roman Empire fell. They had their own language and religion but had very little to do with post-punk posing that we see in today's society.

Suddenly, during the 1980s, as a concession to the energy of punk and the pristine peacocking of the New-Romantics, the 'gothic-punks' began to appear. Initially they modeled themselves on the Addams Familly, and then began to adopt the medieval, and victorian gothic into their costume.

In a nutshell, if you truly want to be as close to a being an authentic 'goth' as possible, grab yourself an axe and go kill some Romans.

True 'goth' died ages ago, I have no idea what this new one is.

sry i forget how to do quotes. I just wanted to say not all music is like that. there's death metal: wanting other people to die and classic rock: wanting to have sex. so yeah its not everything. But let me say why emo bands have such a bad reputation. anyone who plays guitar can tell from listening that this kid on his guitar can not play. He just wants fame so he plays simplistic enough riffs for people to listen and buy their crap. Same with the drummer, (my borther plays drums) who changes the beat once every six songs. I don't know anything about bass though so I won't go there. Whining is not singing. And that is what defines an emo band whether the band likes it or not. A sellout, whiny, talentless band of media whores. So really I guess emo is different for everyone. People who listen to this music aren't always bad people, but the ones that like to pretend they have such a horrible life are too overdramatic and listening to them put up this act is like having holes drilled in my head. but again its not all of them.

And one last thing about the emo bands themselves. what do they have to whine abuot? how could their lives be so terrible if they're selling millions of albums and making billions of dollars, selling out shows no matter where they go and going on tour everywhere with some of the best bands in the world?

i like goths. goths are creepy. and i love their music.

Funny, I remember Metallica doing that about the Naptser thing.

But anyway, I'm listening to Gothic music right now {Gothradio.com} and I've not heard a single song about wanting to die. I've been listening for about 2 hours and not once has there been a song about wanting to die, breaking up with someone, or the other stereotypical stuff.

I still listen to the music but I don't put so much effort into the clothing like I used to. But I still get labeled as Goth no matter what I wear. Guess it must be a vibe I put out.
