Quite recently the first trailer of the 4th installment of the Grand Theft Auto series was released, revealing that the game will take place in NYC, (Or at least someplace extremely similar).

The Local government of NYC, including the mayor and the city council is outraged at this, and beleive the game will portray the city in a bad way...which is rather ironic, because many of the crimes that take place in GTA take place quite often in NYC daily.

Some people are saying that this is just the government lashing out at vidogames, because in things like TV and media, NYC is portrayed just as badly, yet the government does not say anything.

Others are saying that the Mayor and his assosiattes are right to try and put a stop to the development of the game.

While others say that the NY government is a bunch of idiots who are freaking out over nothing.

    Thoughts anyone?

NYC is the best place ever.

Apart from these old, uptight Mayors, no one cares. GTA4 is gonna rock now (hates GTA).

I live in NYC and even I think the government is freaking out. The government needs to realize two things:

    1. The first three GTAs took place in NYC, and they didn't slander NYC. Unless, rockstar puts porn in it again, the media probably won't give a ****. It's the sex there worried about, not the violence, they blame vieo games for that.

    2. A person can't become violent from playing a video game. If a person is violent and they play video games, the two are unrelated, if a person is violent then a person is jsut violent. Now as for the sex in video games, first off I don't see anyone complaining about God of War where there's is more realistic(and hell, no noe complains about GoW's violence either, just idiot media hate the fact that guns are in a top selling video game). Next, kids probably already know about it anyway, there is nothing GTA will tell them that they don't already know, considering it's everywhere. I honestly don't understnad why sex is treated like such a bad thing anyway, if people weren't suppossed to knowe about or have sex then the population wolud have ceased long ago. Without sex no humans would exist. And media, government, people need to realize that they made it into a 'bad thing'.

They're just worried it would make NYC look like a bad place. But I remember one GTA game was on liberty and they didn't react about that, so why now?

Well, Liberty City Stories, if that's what you're refering to was a much more low-key kinda game. It was for the psp after all.

And I personally beleive that the government is just targeting the game because of past arguements. The thing about the government is: They are power, they control the country, and they deem what is right and wrong. I'm sorry, but MOST of the arguments in todays society are caused by religion, and the government is no different. They take the "morals" they elarn from the bible and make them into laws. Anyway, things like this aren't tolerated, and the government freaked out about the sex minigame in GTA3. They LOST that arguement, and this was a mighty ego blow. Now that the 4th game is coming out, they're gonna take another wack at the gaming industry to try and take back that power.

However, I do beleive that a game like GTA4 would portray the city badly. It may be exactly what happens in NYC everyday, but something like this COULD stunt tourism and break down a large chunk of the economy. It's not a very good thing to be known for being a city of crime, so much so that you were immortalized in a videogame for that sole purpose.

I guess all it comes down to is truthfully how the PEOPLE view the game, impretionable people (dumbasses) will see the game and never want to go to NYC. However, the average person would see the game and realize it is a videogame, not real, fictional, virtual. The government thinks we're all dumbasses, so they're jumping to conclusions. I geuss we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I agree, but my guess is that the government wants this to become a controversy for the sake of money and more power, i mean, come on, it's just a game for crying out loud, A game is just for entertainment, i mean come on, would you think a game like that would ruin NYC that fast?

4th installment for GTA? AND in NYC? That sounds so cool! But I understand why the mayor would be upset...tho wouldnt the adults know it's just a game and NYC is really not like that?

Liberty City, the city in which you play in for GTA1-3 and Liberty city stories is based on New York. Actually all GTA games are based on somewhere in the US.

    Vice city - Miami
San Andreas - Las Vegas, Los Angelos and San Francisco.

They are overacting since gaming is coming much more every day and the norm.

Yeah, I think it's truthfully much more like culture shock. Most of the people in government are at least 30+ years old. And when they were growing up, videogames were a lot more rare. Videogames are becoming about as common as a Tv, they're everywhere.

And the government was overreatcing about things like comic books 60 or so years ago, and they haven't ruined society. I think that they're just thinking of it as a threat, unlike the children who have videogames as their everyday lives. When our generation moves up and becomes the government, you won't be seeing problems like this.

Maybe it's because I'm interested in video games myself, but I always get defensive when governments, attorneys, lawyers, etc. start attacking video games. It's not as though other media doesn't show violence.

GTA has always been criticized, and a game like that can't avoid it, plain and simple. But banning it for the truth, or at least portrayals of the truth? That's...stupid.

I don't agree with much of anything in GTA. But I can't say I agree with NYC, if what you say is true. Then again, it is their city and they can defend it.

This is all too confusing. It all comes down to right and wrong, people's beleifs, and whether they honestly care. Does GTA ever truly affect anyone anyway? How many people do you know who honestly care about it?

These are the kinds of things (while this is on a much smaller scale) that start wars.

After all of the battles, you end up with something lost or with something you could have done without in the end by either finding new solutions together or getting over it.
