I would have agreed except for this part.

It really does not, except to set up the basic premise of Kaijus attacking Earth and Earth having to figure out how to counter-attack. The moment it makes the two-brain Godzilla reference, it's pretty damn obvious that the movie knows it's not really realistic. Not to mention stereotypical Australian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and American characters.

    ..........

Dude, I haven't seen Grown Ups 2 but I at least have frame of reference for my dislike of it. The first movie was terrible. But all you got is what you've seen from the trailers.

Hahaha, hey, remember when James Cameron's Avatar broke box office records and it was quote-unquote "critically acclaimed"? Ahahahahahahaaaaaaahahaehehehe...

Are you comparing Avatar to Grown Ups 2? I have my problems with Avatar ("bad humans/invaders, good natives" cliche, Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves/The Last Samurai plot ripoff, biologically impossible aliens, etc) but Jesus, it wasn't that bad.

I'm just sayin' that box office standings really don't necessarily reflect the true quality of a movie. In rare cases, they might, but that's why there's the difference between commercial and critical successes.

Also, I kinda liked Avatar but it was nothing special to me.

Hey! 38 mil! I'll take it.

Not true- Reign Over Me and Funny People are proof he can act. This doesn't mean we should support him, it means we should be madder that he makes crap like this.

But movies that are successful or critical acclaim do tend to see a spike in their type of film. As such, a big reason I want Pacific Rim to succeed is because I really do want more big-monster movies stateside, and I especially want more mecha movies stateside. As bleh as Cloverfield was, it was a really cool concept at least. Super 8 was cool too, and I'm in eager anticipation for the next Godzilla film.

I work in a small theater and I can tell you that most of the time, the movies we do pick up (we have four screens so we don't get everything) are ones we can rely on being busy. We are going to get Pacific Rim now that we know it's done solid business, but we'd easily choose a movie like Grown Ups 2 because we know it'll be busy just based on the big names in it.

The real explanation here is that most people prefer dumb comedies to dumb scifi movies--and neither of those are meant good or bad, I've not seen either movie, but when given a choice between scifi or comedy, the general public chooses comedy, or cares about things like name recognition.

More room in the scifi theater for me.

I know that's how it works generally, but...if its not obvious already, I was hoping for this one to really go in the sci-fi genre's favor. As I've said, I want more movies like Pacific Rim. It would give them more breathing room to improve on what flaws the film had, instead of having to be generalized and simple to appeal to broader audiences...guess that's just the hopeful mecha nerd in me.

On a related note, don't you absolutely love when you and the person/people you came with are the only ones in the theater for a good, dumb movie?

Sure it means the movie isn't doing swell and probably won't get a sequel, but who cares? Not all movies need sequels or are built around them. It gets another chance when it hits DVD

Put it this way, superhero/Sci Fi films have already dominated the charts this year with Iron Man, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Man of Steel all having Sci Fi concepts.
People at this point in the year probably won't care about another Sci Fi-ish film considering the amount of ones already released this year.

And before people start saying Superhero and Sci Fi genres are different, yes they can be, but superhero genres usually base themselves off of some other genres.
Man of Steel is about an alien baby come to Earth to stop his alien arch nemesis.
Iron Man 3 is about a man developing a powersuit to ward off rogue powersuits destroying the world.
    And Star Trek, nuff said.
So, there's plenty of sc fi films, Pacific Rim is coming out at a bit of a rough time.

Actually, I'm right with you here that most new superhero movies are basically sci-fi. Sci-fi doesn't mean it takes place in the world of Tron, it means the science/technology within the universe of the entertainment is fictitious. (Broke some new ground here). Other than Spider-Man, I would definitely say most superhero movies are sci-fi, or at least appeal to the same crowd. I mean the beginning of Man of Steel could seriously be its own sci-fi short film.

That said, this is still a good thing. Companies don't think of what they competed against, they think of how much profit they drew in. With superhero and sci-fi movies drawing in such larges sums of money, we're definitely going to see more of them. And I've always said that sci-fi leads a wider range of creativity.

Luckily, this was just warming up the world for next year's big American Kaiju movie. Cheers to Godzilla 2014, everybody.[DOUBLEPOST=1373889874][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah! Other than Transformers! It's pretty weird that the movie associated the mechs with both cultures in its 'let's bring together the hemispheres subplot'

This. Does anyone remember the last mecha film? I'll tell you, Robot Jox. From 1989. Yeah, so a reason I want this to succeed is to get more mecha films made. Giant monster films as well since those fell out of popularity around the 90's.

Also, Godzilla 2014! (which is being produced by the same studio as Pacific Rim. Support it you clowns.)

Arright look everyone pushing Boosa around in this thread is forgetting one very important thing:

Pacific Rim is directed by Guillermo Del Toro

and if you have anything but love and respect for him you are scum and you need to leave planet Earth not up for debate

I liked Ferngully when it first came out it's good to see it getting some recognition

    Preach my brother!

Dances with Wolves was a pretty decent movie.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that this speech should have been used in Avatar?

Weirdly, I'd say Transformers has reinvigorated the mecha movie genre in the west.

    ....Some things just work out.
