If you followed the above tutorial, it should be 5.50 GEN-D3.

Did you follow the above tutorial?

um, sure, well I downloaded cfw, unzipped it onto my desktop, then moved it into my mem stick root folder, then followed your guide to the point where the screen blinks green, then after the screen blinked green I went to the game area on my psp clicked HC Recovery Flash clicked the install choice to the one you specified then hit install and installed cfw.

I mean reinstall CFW. If it doesn't say 5.50 GEN-D3 under system information now, then something went wrong, and you should try again.

If your firmware doesn't say "5.50 GEN-D3" then it hasn't installed correctly, or rather, you've installed a different firmware since then.

Wait, you're still in the HEN?

This makes sense. The HEN is a temporary thing. When you ran the Patapon game, it made your PSP into a CFW (HEN 6.20) for the time being. If you power off your PSP completely, you'll need to run Patapon again. Run Hellcat's Recovery Flasher like I specified above to make it into 5.50 GEN and make it permanent

kk so tell me if I'm right or wrong, so I run patapon and then hold R to run HellCats recovery flasher and the thing should in install cfw v5.50. So am I right or am I wrong?

    Wrong.

You run Patapon, yes. You don't hold 'R' at this point. You click on “continue” and load the crafter savegame. When asked for it by patapon, click on “any button” to continue. This is when you hold 'R'. It now returns you to the XMB. This has temporarily enabled your PSP to run programs. Now you go to the Game area of the XMB and run the Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. You then click continue, press 'X' to cycle through the firmware options until it gives you the choice to load a firmware pack. You then click Install CFW. You select the 5.50GEN thing that appears in the list that pops up. It will ask you whether to keep settings. Don't bother keeping settings. Then it will install it for you.

After doing that, you will permanently have CFW (unless you update :B|:). You then are to power off the PSP completely (hold the power switch up for five seconds) then turn back on while holding the 'R' button. That will put you in the Recovery Menu (which is NOT the same as Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. It's just the name of the menu). You can activate plugins here. I can explain that when you actually get there.
