Reporter is the role you're looking for.

I'm inclined to agree with Marushi and co. regarding default, but I'm gonna hold off on voting until everyone's posted at least once. I can corroborate Cat~'s info about Cal, though; her last activity was a comment on a post on her profile today, and before that, her last activity was a couple of Likes on Thursday. [/amaury]

    Reporter.

But let's remember that even if he's the reporter, there are four other special roles for him to worry about: tracker, watcher, redirector and vigilante. This would explain the kind of apathy toward really finding anyone in either camp on the first shot since the redirector is aligned with the mafia. And thinking about it, it'd actually be better for the reporter if townies didn't end up lynching mafiosi. Not only does it give them more time to figure out who they need to off, but the odds of taking out who they need to take out are much better if they aim for townies/non-mafia.

I'm not saying it isn't, but it's just a drop in the stream and getting one off early on isn't much help and it would only be useful if we can connect that person to others. I dunno, I was really just tossing that scenario out there, I wasn't really stating it as fact. Also i didn't really mean to get defensive :v sorry about that Marushi

Wow, sorry for not posting . I had a big reason, literally lol, but I don't really suspect anyway right now but it's kind of hard since it's still the beginning of the game. Anyway, what bugs me is the reporter, I'll probably have to look at the rules again, but if the Reporter wins when all the other roles are gone then whoever has them really needs to be careful. Because if they suspect someone has a role they'll try to turn everyone against them. Wow, that was a lot of words.

Oh and does anyone know how to tag Reno because I was trying but I cant figure it out with that weird R.

@Ɍeno I don't know if it worked since the name didn't pop up but I'll try and get a hold of him another way if he's not busy.

This is true. And also, the Reporter poses a danger to Townies that shouldn't go unmentioned. There are four other roles besides reporter, I believe, and three of those four are Townies. (though I'm a bit confused; are all of the special roles in this game, and do these roles replace or supplement the cop/doctor thing? Nova?) That means that the reporter will try their hardest not only to find the special Mafia member, but they'll be trying to get three Townies killed as well. And while the Reporter has no lynch abilities, it is still a dangerous role, especially if given to someone who is naturally a leader and able to persuade people to follow their ideas. So, while I think it's more important to hunt down the mafiosa, who are almost certain to get a lynch a night, we shouldn't treat the role of the Reporter with disregard; they pose a threat to us as well.

So, even if default's suspicious behavior can be attributed to the possibility of his being the reporter, that doesn't necessarily let him off the hook. :/ Sorry, @default . What are your thoughts on this?

I think Makaze is a threat because of his strong personality and his potential ability to influence the Town because of his experiences with Mafia compared to the rest of us. Since we don't really know who the actual threats are, I felt like it would be best to target seemingly potential threats. But it is a double-edged blade, since if he does turn out to be Town, Mafia pretty much gained the upper-hand with that loss. So, I guess I've realized that maybe he shouldn't be the one to chase. At least not yet. Keep an eye on him like everyone else, but maybe there's something to benefit from his survival.

    Unvote: Makaze

Oh, I wasn't trying to get you to stop chasing Makaze. If you think he's the biggest threat, it makes sense that you would vote for him. I hope I wasn't coming across too pushy. Your explanation regarding why you chose Makaze makes sense, even if you did end up changing your mind regarding those reasons. However, I'm not unvoting you yet, because until someone else becomes more suspicious to me, you're currently in the hot seat, sorry.

While I gather my thoughts, visualizing data is fun. Although mafia is not necessarily a game of numbers, we can take a swig of bars from time to time. I love bars. Bars are the love of my life. Drinks on me, dears.

For a second I thought I eviscerated hyuge's page 9 post and posted my content in her quote box back there. These powers are terrible. Vote: my attention span[DOUBLEPOST=1408414517][/DOUBLEPOST]
The Reporter serves to be an extremely volatile role. Information is power in mafia; it is why towns are often at a disadvantage. Thus, the Reporter, being one of the lowest informational-entropy roles by directly knowing the roles of others, would hypothetically be the most advantageous role to wagontarget the mafia's dangerous Redirector, for example. This of course comes at the cost of the Reporter's mechanical anti-town bias of taking out the three roles that allow us to stay afloat in this game. Compound this with the constant-Bernoulli-trial guesswork of investigation each night (on the basis of suspicion) and our long-term survival, in a way, depends on being able to influence the thought process of the Reporter and who they choose to investigate. This is also highly relevant for the vigilante - homogeneity in Townthink is boom or bust if we play our cards right, but what differentiates a vigilante from a serial killer is that they are actively attempting to target mafiosi alone. Do we equally focus on the Reporter as a threat as much as the Mafia by virtue of their selective influence? I agree with you that we should be wary, for now, because it can equally be an asset. To a certain point. But we must not let too much skepticism come to destroy us. Do not let the mafia influence our Townthink. Night kills become less relevant when they can easily let us consume ourselves in the flames of hopelessness and infighting.

Vote: @Hayabusa , how is the Miami weather today?

Suppose you lynch mafia day one. Chances are the mafia either joined in at the last minute or actively argued against the lynch.

How many voted to lynch them? How did they vote? When? How much convincing did they take to join the mob? Who focused on other people? Who didn't vote at all?

Mafia don't have to think very hard or react very strongly to a mislynch. No matter who the mislynch is on, all they have to do is agree. How they react when one of their own is under fire is bound to be more erratic. Each vote after the initial lynch adds to the info you already have, compounding it. It sets mafia on their toes, forces them to make a stand, and makes them nervous and likely to slip up. What's to fear?

Ah, see, I had not thought of this. You're right; we should be cautious, but for now it's way more important to hunt down the Mafia.

On this note, I just want to clear something up: when I said that I find it helpful to know for sure who my allies are, I was not saying that I actively investigate for them first, and save the Mafia hunting for later. I meant if I am investigating something that seems suspicious of Mafia behavior, and I decide that it's more indicative of a townie or a town role, I continue to investigate them AS WELL AS moving on in my search for Mafia. To start the game by investigating for allies first and mafia later would be a very risky way to play, and would more often then not lead to a lost game. So no, I don't think it's a good idea to look for friends before enemies, even if it's helpful to have a trusted ally. Those should happen accidentally during a mutual search for the true mafia members.

I personally feel that keeping track of allies and suspected enemies does not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive, nor in discrete binary. Scouting friend and foe can be part of the same overarching tactical step in one's long-term strategy; oftentimes it is the mutual search that can achieve this as you mentioned, from what I understand. Running counts are always your closest friends. But as with many things, the priority of focus depends on the conditions of the game at that point.

    Aren't we repeating ourselves?

What kind of investigating are we talking about? Why isn't it happening now?

Well, the reason I repeated myself was because there have been a couple posts today regarding my saying that I play the game backwards by searching for allies instead of foes. So I just wanted to clear that up. As far as what kind of investigation I was talking about, I just mean trying to read between the lines regarding what some people say, and, later on when there's more to go on besides mere word choice, their voting habits and the like. So really, the investigation that I'm referring to is going on as we speak. I trust no one yet, which is fine as today is day one. I am merely waiting for someone to slip up and say something that either condemns them or alleviates suspicion.
