I think that you don't need strength of heart to hurt heartless. Sora couldn't hurt the heartless with the wooden sword at the beginning because he was a wimp. When he got a decent wepon that could actually hurt something, the keyblade, he could hurt them. This is why he could hurt them with the wooden sword later on, because he was much stronger. Anyone with strength and a decent wepon could kill a heartless. The only reason the Org. needed a keyblade bearer was because the keyblade is specially made for killing heartless, unlike other wepons.

I always figured it was only those with a strong heart who could kill a heartless.

Its just that Sora is usually the first everyone thinks of since he has the strongest heart in the universe apparently.

Sora could barely do any damage with the wooden sword at Hollow Bastion. Beast going with him had his claw weapons and Sora going with him but Sora hardly could do anything to them at all himself.

In the end, all I can figure as to why the Keyblade is special and why the Org hounded Sora and Roxas was because it was needed to actually deliver the Hearts to Kingdom Hearts, or in the case of Xemnas, trick them to going to his pseudo Kingdom Hearts. If anyone could do that, then Xemnas's whole mission point of bothering Sora so much was ridiculous and had no merit at all. The Heartless are also drawn to the Keyblade's power so it is important too that he can bring them out whereas in some places they hide until Sora does show up. However, it's clear that if the Org could have killed the Heartless to make them go where Xemnas wanted without Roxas or Sora, neither would have been critical to his plans.

So, though it's -really subtle- and others can 'fight' the Heartless with weapons and magic, I don't think they really can release the Hearts without Sora being there as the Keyblade may be what sends them on and prevents the Heartless from either being utterly destroyed to include the actual Heart contained within, or they just reform somewhere else. I can't think of another explanation yet that could explain how others can fight them but yet what makes a Keyblade so special as the reason is hinted at, but never absolutely spelled out for us.

what about in KH2 when sephiroth confronted cloud? he took out an entire gang of heartless and all their hearts were released. the more you think about it, the less sense it makes

Oh yeah, sorry, I could take them down because I was at level seventy when they made me fight with the wooden sword. Aparently I was stronger than most people usually were then. But, I know you could at least hurt them with the wooden sword, even if it wasn't much. And if people were suddenly able to hurt heartless when Sora was around, I think they would have mentioned it. If I swung at a cloud with a baseball bat, and someone walked into the room and all the sudden I actually hit the cloud, personally I would be a little suprised and say something.

Sora was standing there when Cloud and Sephiroth faced off. Also, Sephiroth being a person of darkness and an FF7 cameo, we don't know much to him. When Sephiroth though and Cloud face off, Sora is there in the area so the theory would still hold plausible.

In the end though, I ponder if Nomura really thought it out so well at points or if it's just meant to be like this and make us wonder.

i personnally think this idea might be simpiler. the developers were cutting corners by not making two diffrent death sequences for the heartless, one for when sora kills them where the heart is released and one for everyone else where the heart wasn't released.

    basiclly, they just got sloppy

Thats not ture... whenever a nobody kills a heartless its hearts are not released.

Also, Xigbar kills a gang of them and no hearts are released.

I thought I'd just throw this in here for evidence points or what not. Stitch is the upper left.

And Legion, ICSP's talking about when Xigbar confronts Sora after Saix bum-rushed him with Heartless in The Castle That Never Was.

The Emblem Heartless will release Hearts since they hold Hearts and that was their purpose, I guess by the intention of Xehanort (KH1 Ansem). The Shadow Heartless and others that lack the symbol are Pureblood Heartless and will not release Hearts but instead dissipate.

I do think someone of a strong Heart can release the Hearts of the Emblem ones and need magic or some kick butt magical weapon or something to do any real damage to them. I still debate though if Sora in some way with the Keyblade is not helping though with his links to people to make it more possible when he's around or not. The Keyblade at least lures them out and also must send them onwards more so than anything else really because otherwise the Org's plans make no sense at all. Also, I think this because Sora and the Keyblade seem to be linked to people he meets or Namine's effect on him at Castle Oblivion in CoM shouldn't have made others forget him. There's just something abnormal about the scenario concerning the Keyblade and Heartless.
