Am I the only one who picked up on the fact that for the pictured conversation it isn't about "thou must read the book" but instead that said girl doesn't want the ending spoiled but also doesn't want read it. I'm in agreement with the fact that she should decide if she actually wants to read it or not and go with it. If you want to then do it so you don't leave your friends spoiler dodging forever, but if you don't want to read it then the story being spoiled doesn't matter.

But yeah the pushy hype tends to kill things. You end up with a lot of people either going "Something this popular must be a masterpiece" and others going "I'll read it to make you happy and to know what others are talking about, but I'm not going to like it." So yeah, you either set the bar too high or declare a self fulfilling prophecy and either way don't like it in the end. So whenever you push something more than just a friendly recommendation you are doing your own small part in killing the series for someone. Though admittedly it took a lot of recommending for me to decide Hunger Games was a good idea, the premise just didn't sound interesting to me.

Battle Royale clone, hence my disliking for it, nothing's better than battle royale.

Really? Because the idea of little bastards killing each other for my amusement actually attracted me to it.

It struck me as being more like 1984+Lord of the Flies+Modernization.

Also, I totally thought you meant KHV Royale for a moment.

Didn't say it wasn't, just that I've yet to recommend it to someone (besides non-gamers, obviously) and be turned down. Most have already played it anyway.

I saw the Hunger Games and I thought it was a pretty good movie, but I don't have an urge to read the books. I also heard that the story line finished after one book, and didn't need to be dragged out for another two. From what my sister says the second book disappointed her. Who cares what other people think about it though? You don't have to agree with their opinion

Yeah. A prime example of something I can't stand about it are the people who get all giddy about irrelevant yaoi pairings instead of focusing on the actual story line of the game.

I've heard this too, with me reading only the first book. I've heard that the last too books go off on a completely different tangent from the first one. If they took out a few small things at the end (that didn't get explained anyway, so it's basically sequel bait), it could have been its own stand alone story.

    *walk into thread*

    *see this*

*remember when you tried to "cure" someone of not wanting to watch anime*

stop trying to force your interests and likes on other people.

    *leave*

That was her FEAR of anime. I did't care if she liked it, just that she disliked it. My aim was to make her indifferent about it. This is about her aversion to the written word. If she refuses to read she'll end up like everyone else who thinks reading is rubbish.

So why Hunger Games then, clearly this is about imprinting your affection for the franchise upon her and not the love of reading, you could hand her any book and tell her to read it, but you're enforcing this one, City of Ember is a fantastic book, tell her to read that, or John Dies at the End, many other good book series' out there.

It's what the comment thread was about anyway, so anything else wouldn't have been relevant. I joined in near the end. If I'd had a choice, I would have pushed I, Robot on her instead.
