I don't know, I've been waiting for someone to return the 1st volume. In Hollow Fields, a girl, Lucy, tries to go through a shortcut through a forest to get to a school for proper ladies and ends up at Hollow Fields school. It's a free school where young mad scientists, graverobbers, and evil robot mechanics go to follow in their evil parents' footsteps.

"Perhaps I can calm it. All our other children liked me at this stage." "One human steak coming right up."

 

She nods in agreement.

 

He put a hand on her stomach and slowly reached out to the child with his mind.

 

It lets out a feral snarl as it keeps its mind in the deepest corner of its mind.

 

"Relax, child." He said as he rubbed her stomach. "I'm your dad and I mean you no harm."

 

Tilts its head in wonder and slowly comes out of its corner.

 

He smiled warmly at it mentally.

 

It pats where it senses its father's hand. She giggles.

 

He tickled the spot with a finger.

 

She giggles harder. It withdrew back into its corner.

 

"Relax, that's just you mother making that noise."

 

"What noise?" Both of them asked in unison.

 

"Your giggling. I would think that the child could hear it."

 

It gives a feral snarl again. She coughs. "Seems upset."

 

"Why are you upset, little one?"

 

"Too many shifts."

 

"In what? Emotion? Blood levels?"

 

"I guess you can call that."

 

"Sorry. It's sort of a rough time right now. Your mother had wounds that were bleeding, that's why there wasn't a lot of food for you."

 

"Whatever. Tell my mother to hurry up."
