After months of rumors, and a week of teases, Spyro the Dragon is officially back, and he's returning in time for the purple dragon's 20th anniversary.

Activision announced today the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, developed by Skylanders devs Toys for Bob. The trilogy will include Spyro's three original PS1 outings — Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon — with new, remastered graphics, sound, available on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and Xbox One X on September 21.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is currently available for preorder and will cost $39.99 on both platforms. For plenty of more information, check out IGN's interview with members of the Toys for Bob development team.

As a nod to the franchise's heritage, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy North American owners can enter the iconic code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, square) in the menu of Crash Bandicoot Warped to watch the trailer, too.

The original three games were developed by Marvel's Spider-Man dev Insomniac Games, who Toys for Bob showed early iterations of the game to for feedback, though Insomniac is in no way officially involved in the Trilogy's development or production. Toys for Bob began working with Spyro on the toys-to-life game Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

The game will feature a "reimagining" of Stewart Copeland's beloved soundtrack for the first three games, while the team also endeavored to work with as many original cast members as possible in re-recording the voice acting. Of course, Spyro had two different voices across the three games, but Tom Kenny, who voiced Spyro in Ripto's and Year, has returned to voice him for all three remastered games.

Toys for Bob's studio head Paul Yan and art director Josh Nadelberg could not comment on whether PC or Nintendo Switch versions of the game were being considered. They did, however, speak exclusively to IGN about gameplay changes, the voice acting choices, and whether they discussed the remasters with Insomniac in the interview below.

Spyro the Dragon's return has been speculated for months, particularly after the success of last year's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. That fervor picked up this week when IGN received a scaly, purple egg hinting at Spyro's return, which was followed by a series of clues indicating the beloved character's return.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the Crash Bandicoot trilogy remake, I'm really looking forward to this, even though I didn't play any of the original Spyro games before (except for a demo of the first game).
