The addition of different difficulty is a nice touch. I can see myself doing it in all difficulties.

    QFFT.

    I hate items with a passion. >:P
I've gotten too used to playing without them for local tournaments that whenever I actually play with them on, it feels like it's cheating. xD

    It looks quite unlikely.

Nay, it's only the enjoyment in YOUR opinion. I <3 Brawl for it's ingenious fighting system and design. Items for me truly just get in the way of having a good time fighting someone.

anyways, at this point, no... it looks unlikely but Nintendo has always been full of surprises.
True, although I admit sometimes it is fun to throw random crap at your friends :3

It all depends. People enjoy the game more with or without items, and I'm sure Sakurai knew this or else he wouldn't have given people the option to turn them off. Like Moodkip said, it's a matter of opinion on just how much enjoyment items bring to the game(s).

I'm not against items, personally, I won't argue or complain if I'm playing with a group of people who want to use them, and more importantly, if they're just looking for some fun. I'm all for it under these circumstances. I have enough friends who play smash for this reason alone.

On the other hand, I have many friends as well who are very competitive in nature--and this aspect in itself can also be very fun--so naturally items are turned off and I don't find my enjoyment being any less than when items are on (actually, it might be a little higher since I, myself, prefer not having items; this is also an opinion).

Items, to some degree, I feel were intentionally designed to elevate the chances of being 'lucky' or 'unlucky', and simply increase the degree of 'randomness' in a match because it's supposed to promote the idea that the game is primarily about having nonsensical fun, and that the occasional blunder of hitting a bom-omb as its descending through the sky is something to 'laugh about' rather than b!tch about. I won't deny that Smash Bros *can* be played effectively in this way and can be thoroughly enjoyed by those who want this kind of play.

But there are people (myself included) who find more enjoyment in having more control in how their games are played. Sure, getting blasted off the map by a falling bomb-omb doesn't mean the end of the world, but it's certainly unfortunate when you're trying to have a competitive brawl with a friend. Randomness and 'unlucky happenings' aren't really wanted when trying to fairly declare one's momentary superiority in the game. I think lots of people misunderstand and are too quick to judge these individuals as "taking the game too seriously". Competition is simply just another way people have fun. It adds a dimension that motivates people to try their very best at a game they love to play, and turning off items helps with producing a result that is genuinely reflective of their progress/skill in the game (one can declare they won or lost due to controllable variables/factors).

Anyway, I digress from the main point. EDIT: Because of differing degrees of preference and opinion on items and how 'fun' they are, it's impossible to determine their value in smash bros, so let's just try to keep those kinds of bouts/trash(XD) on smashboards.
