Just for those who might not have seen it and need a link: 10-minute long interview

Pretty much confirms that the character selection screen (or pretty much all of the screens) we've all seen thus far is a prototype developed solely for the demo featured at San Francisco. The final screens will probably appear different.

Also based on this video, further hints that the delay is indeed in the online component area. Although announced on the dojo website and gave some very basic insights on how the system will work, it's obvious that since they chose not to showcase it at San Francisco, the online function is still pretty much incomplete and still not good enough to beta to the public.

Get it fixed, Sakurai. *shakes fist angrily*

Thanks for that, Soush. I'm glad that those are just demo screens.

Bah! I want to play as Pit, Ike and Sonic more than any other character. Curse this delay.

    ======================================

Today I have some good news and some bad news. Let's get the bad part out of the way first, shall we?

As many of you may have already heard, we have had to delay the launch of Super Smash Bros. Brawl by just a little bit—it will now be launching on February 10th in the Americas. I know that many of you will be disappointed by this news, but please understand that the extra development time will enable us to make the game the best it can be. It is my earnest hope that you will all be enjoying this game for many years, and we are all working very hard toward that goal.

Phew. Now for some good news to tide you over.

The forthcoming E for All event will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center beginning October 18.

And it appears that this event will display the first ever public playable version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl! I am planning on having people play the game—but with limited character selection.

The problem is Sonic. What to do... I suppose if we’re going to all this trouble, perhaps we should make him playable.

Oh, yes. And for those of you who come to play, please remember—you tap the Control Stick to do Smash attacks.

    Have fun!

    ==============================

I'm going to say it again .......NNNNNNNNUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!

From now on, Black Day will never be talked of again. xD

Seriously though, this really is bitter sweet. I mean, sure it sucks that it's a while away, but, for me that means I'll be done with finals and be able to play a LOT more.

Yeah, I figured that was just a demo character screen since it didnt have the other people that were announced. I just hope maybe the wifi situation can be resolved early and that maybe the release date can be in like January or something.

Lol, in my case it's worse that it's February. At least with December 3rd, I'd have to ignore Smash for a week or so just to study, but I'd be free as a bird to play endlessly over the Christmas Break.

February, is well, midterm month, and I don't finish classes until April. This new release date is smack middle of the term. That means, I'd have to wait until Summer to get a good hand on the game.

Sakurai's update today was so.. blah. There's some obvious sugarcoating going on, I'm still not 100% happy with the delay. Sure, it gives them more time to 'make it the best it could be', but in all honesty, a part of me feels like they've been irresponsible and haven't been keeping to their promises. I mean, technically if you delayed Smash Bros Brawl for another year, it'd probably be many times better than it'd be if it were released in February. The simple fact is that the more time you have, the better it'll be. But then the game would never come out. This is my issue. Sure, giving you more time, Sakurai, will make the game better, but there's a limit to that logic.

Since no EU release date has been given yet, I don't overly care, though this will effect the EU launch. >_>

Pain but it's better than rushing.

^ I do agree, I'd rather wait an extra two months than get a half assed game.

Would you say the same thing if the game was delayed again for another year? Let's face it. Everytime a delay happens, people like to say "well I'd rather have it perfect than half-***". But when does that end? It was originally slated for Spring of 2007. It was going to be perfect in the Spring and anytime before then would've made it half-***. Then a delay hit and it was tentatively pushed till September 2007 (or beginning of Q4). Now the game was going to be 'perfect' in September, and releasing it in the Spring would've made it half-***. Then finally at E3, they pushed it to December 3rd. It was going to be perfect come December, and a September release would've made it half-***.

    When does it end?

So at this point, the assumption is that when February hits, the game will be perfect. But let's say the game hypothetically gets further pushed to March, June, or even September 2008. Under this logic, once again the game will be perfect in May/June/September, and that it would've been half-*** if released in February.

I'm all for the cause, but let's face the facts. It's not a matter of making the game perfect than it is Sakurai just not settling down with what exactly it is he wants to do with the game. He just keeps changing his mind on things. Melee was far from this 'perfect' that Sakurai seems to impossibly chase, but people have been playing Melee since day one and continue to do so until this day and the amount of criticisms have never outmatched the praises.

What people won't see or get in a game doesn't make a game less than what it's really worth. Melee could've had many other things too if Sakurai spent more time to do it, but for a GC launch title, the game obviously pleased the masses if people are still playing it now.

Brawl has reached a fine line with me in terms of what I feel is justified production time. What pisses me off the most is that the one thing Sakurai and co. guaranteed to us smashers *repeatedly* since Wii launch is that we'd get the game in 2007 (Remember the first delay: Brawl not a launch title! Delayed till 2007!)? Granted, once we saw the "December 3rd" release date flash across the E3 screen, we all immediately thought "I figured when they said 2007, they'd take ALL the time in the world before fulfilling that promise".

Well guess what, the only sole promise they made was broken, and Reggie now looks like a f*cking idiot. It's not a surprise that at the Nintendo Press Conference, the end of the trailer said "Coming Soon" instead of "February 2008" or simply "2008". Why? Because "Coming Soon" is more 'appealing' and factually elusive, and doesn't readily remind us that the year long '2007' promise has now gone down the ****ter.

February 10. That's it. If there are any more delays from here on, I'm considering Sakurai an indecisive moron. One that has a crap load of talent and enthusiasm, but an indecisive moron. Brawl has been virtually perfect for quite a while in my opinion. The past few weeks to me have simply been one man indulging in unrealistic fantasies about a game that could've easily reaped its success by other means.

120 days. 17 weeks and 1 day. If I have to add so much as a a day more to this counter I'm going to be one angry-*** smasher.

Indecisive moron? Ok that's taking it too far.
Let's look at the facts, shall we?

May 2005. E3 2005. Satoru Iwata takes the stage and talks about the Revolution. He mentions the next Smash Bros. and said he wants it to be online and be out on the Revolution. He announced at the conference that he had a team working on it, when really, he lied, because Sakurai and the future creators of Brawl had no idea this was even in thought of being made. In fact those of you who said "Ohhh but he confirmed itz fur lawnch lulululz"--Bull. I have the conference on my computer. Nintendo couldn't make a snap decision as confirming it on the launch of their next console any how, because there weren't even any dev kits in existance yet, the console didn't even have its new controller confirmed, its NAME wouldn't be confirmed until about 8 months later, and they didn't even have a team working on the game yet. So they couldn't make such a drastic statement as "we're launching it with the Wii". So those of you misinformed with this knowledge better do your research. After the conference, Iwata spoke to Sakurai, asking him if he could help make the game. They set up a team, one that has played Smash Bros. Melee a lot and just finished a big game.

That winter, Sakurai moved to another district of Tokyo, and they had a Nintendo office built there, which would be home to Sora Co. Ltd I believe, the development studio for the next Smash Bros., and I believe it was completed in December (not sure). So as of Winter 05, the team got working on the next Smash Bros.

5-6 months later, at E3 06, the Wii was confirmed to launch in the fall, and they showed the first trailer to Smash Bros. Brawl, with a tentative release of 2007. They never confirmed it to come out at launch, it simply was a "2007" title.

Wii launch came around, and no news. Still just 2007.

Then finally at E3 07, we got the news it would launch in December 2007. Sakurai had kept his promise, and they were working as hard as they could to get the game done by then.

Somewhere between 2 months ago and now, however, they realized they couldn't get all the content they wanted into the game by the end of November. So they delayed it. By a total of 8 weeks. That was the ONLY delay in the process of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so wtf are you talking about when you say "I'm tired of all these delays"? This was the first delay in the game's history, and it's not by much. Be thankful you're not dealing with Square Enix here. The fact we get the game 2 and a half weeks after the Japan launch when other companies can have months of a gap is pretty damn good, so don't get whiney. If you can't find something to do for 2 months, with the overwhelming ****load of games coming out in 2007 already, you're pathetic.

Sakurai's only promise was 2007, and he may have delayed it now, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been working his *** off for the past 2 years to try and bring a game that we will enjoy for years and years to come. And I'd much rather take a game 8 weeks later, bursting at the seams with content and replay value, than a game in December with a laggy online experience, lack of characters, items, stages, and game modes, and feeling empty. Remember, Wii games can't be updated through downloadable patches/updates/bonus content like the other systems, so what you get is the best it's gonna get. It'd be might wise to just wait the 8 weeks out and get a perfect fighting experience.

    Those are my two cents.

PS: Keep in mind, I mentioned the game has not even been in production for 2 years, and you're getting it in February. Most games get 2.5 - 4 year production cycles. Be glad you're not seeing it Winter 2008.

And if you say Brawl has been virtually perfect, I highly disagree. There are less characters confirmed than there are even in Melee, and we have no idea if he had released it in December what kind of content we would miss out on. You've only seen a few screens and video. You can't judge whether the game is good enough to release yet. That's the development team's job, and they said no, so it's no, and it's done with. Sakurai even humbly apologized.

Um, no. I hope you were joking, because Nintendo has been discussing character rights with third parties since Summer/Fall 06, and Sonic had been a deeply desired character since Summer 06. He wasn't just added a couple of weeks ago. He's been a long thought out property in Smash Bros. Especially since (was it Yuji Naka?) Saying he liked the idea of Sonic in Brawl last year.

They were simply waiting for a good event to announce it once they had some decent and final details on the character, and E3 had enough with the release date announcement, so they kept Sonic a secret, and they were able to use him as something to soothe the wound from the delay.

That's funny considering he said third-party characters would be unlockables.

I agree with you there, I do think there is a limit to how long you can 'perfect' a game.

You sir are one piece of **** that needs to get his facts ****in' traight before you come in here and insult me and the people I enjoy talking to. One, did you only look at Soushirei's last paragraph? That's the ONLY ****IN' TIME he ever called him an indecisive moron, I doubt he thinks that yet, but if the game gets delayed again, any intelligent person would pretty much think that of Sakurai. OH he humbly appologized? Well I guess we should all just shut up....
OH WAIT, who gives a ****, he gave his word that he would get that game out on December 3rd. No ****in' humble apology fixes that, grow up.

Now on to my own defense you piece of **** "know it all". Sonic has not been confirmered nor actually talked about through the actual business men and presidents of Nintendo and Sega. Highly desired? By who? Fans who think there opinions are sincerly appreciate? You sir are as gullibe as you are stupid. For the longest time Sega continously stated they were not thinking of putting Sonic in Brawl. Use him to soothe the delay? Bull ****? Nothing can soothe that, and it's no coincidence I have full firmed belief that it's due to Sonic that it's going to be delayed, sure, there may be other reasons, but I think Sonic is a HUGE reason.
He said that a ****in' year ago, he's restated and contridicted his own statements multiple times. I go with the most recent moron.

I just like to sum up in total with, who the hell are you to come into our thread and try to cause ****? I've never seen you here and honestly I never want to see you again with your I know everything attitude. I am normally a peaceful guy who never fights back, but you're the type of person that really pisses the hell out of me.

Excuse me? Where did I insult anyone?

Once is bad enough. All I said was "Indecisive moron? That's taking it too far."

The rest of his post was angry whining.

I don't see anybody calling Tetsuya Nomura and the development team any names for delaying Kingdom Hearts 2 by 2 years, and never releasing the Final Mix's, do I?

Or how about the team behind Zelda Twilight Princess? The game was due in early 2005.

He delays the game by 8 weeks, and deeply apologizes, and everyone gets on Sakurai's case. That is pathetic.

By the way, I've been at KH-Vids since December 2005, I simply don't post here often because of the people that do post here, like you. So don't say I "just came in and started insulting people". I insulted no one.

Yes. There's nothing more he can do. And anonymously mouthing off to me, or whining about it, won't get the game any better or done faster.

    Nomura:
"KH2 comes out in early 2005."
    "KH2 comes out Winter 2005."
    "KH2 comes out 2006."
    "KH2 comes out Winter 2006."
    "KH2 comes out Spring 2007."
    "KH2 comes out March 2007."
    "KH2 comes out March 28th, 2007."

And KH2 still just ended up a mediocre run-of-the-mill RPG.

    Aonuma:
    "Zelda TP comes soon"
"Zelda TP comes out in 2005"
"Zelda TP comes out late 2005"
    "Zelda TP comes out 2006"
"Zelda TP comes out on Wii launch 2006"
"Zelda TP comes out November 18th, 2006"

I want to hear some kicking and screaming at these developers from you.

And technically, Reggie Fils-Aime was the one who "gave his word". Sakurai just blog-posted.

    Mmmmm. Flaming.

Yes. He was. I can show you interviews with Sega and Nintendo hinting to this last year.

Yes. Sakurai took a poll last summer of who people wanted in the game, in Japan. Sonic was the most requested third-party character, and under him was Megaman I believe. Later that Fall it was confirmed Nintendo was talking to companies about rights to characters.

Actually, they said it would be interesting if he was in.

    Maturity sure can.

Sometime between July 2007 and October 2007, Nintendo decided to delay the game. They did not state why, however, you can't discuss, acheive the rights, add, design, balance, and finalize a character within that time, especially since they've been planning third party characters since last year. The delay was most likely because of content, and smoothing out the online and game modes.

I believe same probably goes for you. And it it is not "your" thread. I may not be an active poster at KH-Vids, but I come from the forum the creators of KH-Vids migrated from. I've been on these interwebz way longer than you have. Don't throw the "You don't post here all the time so you don't have a right to post here" attitude. It doesn't really work, especially on me.

I'm simply stating what I know and I can back it up if you'd like.

And you're not one to tell me to not to be here :/

    Doesn't show very well.

PS: You've been reported for flaming.

Where do you get off comparing this to Tp and Kh? Those were a while ago, and people were pissed for that too, when it happened. Why be pissed about it now? It's already freakin' out. Yes, I flammed you a bit, but nothing too serious, you have some really chickenish attitude if you reported me for this little flame. Oh, you migrated here! I should just respect you sincerly shouldn't I? Pssh, I don't care, you're like everyone else here, and that's damn right that I got mad at you for poppin' out of nowhere and just contridicting pretty much this whole thread in one post, while no one was on to defend it. Seriously, I need to grow up? You're the one throwing flawed logic at me and not making any sense. You said you have proof? Let's see it withing the next 10 min. And I'm talking about full fleged proof for anything I'm disagreeing with. That meeting with Nintendo and Sega wasn't for Brawl, I believe it was for a little game calld Mario and Sonic Olympics. It's true, it may have been for Brawl, but it was about the same time that Olympics were announced. I really am normally a peaceful guy, you're just the type of person that makes me want to flame the hell out of because you think you're right and the rest of the world is dead wrong. Reported for flamming? Go ahead, I did flame you, if I get banned, it better have a justified reason, and if it does, fine, I'll take the punishment.

    EDIT:
I see Darkandroid is on, please Darkandroid, ban me now if I deserve it, I'll understand, just don't want the wait to be banned drawn out for a long period.

Moodkip calm down (refering to the post with lots of swearing) Dogenzaka was simply countering the points. It was a discussion, that is what you so....discuss and debate. He was not insulting Soush at all.

So stop flamebaiting. Discuss maturly without the threats or else I will have to give you a warning.

Dogenzaka made some very good points which are true. =/

Edit: Moodkip...he has all the right to post here and counter the points made by Soush. All because you don't agree with them don't go mental.

    EDIT:
Okay, I'm all calm, I went and re-read all the post, and I'm really sorry, Doggy, you really didn't do anything wrong.

One is made by Nintendo (same company that makes Brawl), the other is a company Nintendo was probably consulting for third-party characters. But not just that, I can compare them because they are all three games that have gotten delayed, only TP and KH2 were delayed even longer, and have less replay value.

So it only shows that come March, you guys will be over your anger and be happy playing Smash Bros. and be glad they delayed the game and got it stuffed to the rims full of content.

If I were a chicken I wouldn't have reported you, nor admitted it in front of you.

Never said that. Just tried to make a point. But do respect me as a poster. Just like I'm respecting you by not blowing up angrily, like you.

You had no right to get mad and flame me simply because I decided to take the opposite side of the argument, and defend the man making the game you so bitterly love.

    OMG lol.

I'll try. I might not make it in that time due to the fact I didn't notice your post right away, but ok.

    www.smashbros.com/en_us

It details of how Smash Bros. came to be in the section of 5 pages where he explains it.

There's also the exclusive interview with him last Summer. I'm trying to find all of it right now.

It couldn't have been for both?

Not true. I agree with a lot of people like Zaiaku and TheMuffinMan. I just don't agree with you. It's an awfully proud statement if you are thinking that you and Soushirei are "the rest of the world".

Also, no matter what, resist your temptation to flame me. It's against the rules.

    Ok.
