Tell me how bots and spiders work.

Well if you're serious, in short, they gather information about the site for whatever search engine they come from. Definitely good for statistics.

When they gather the information, where does it go? To a random statistics database or the search engines themselves?

 

I just wish they weren't called spiders

Depends on the spider, but typically they're for keeping the search engine up to date. For example say if we changed "Your Ultimate Source For Kingdom Hearts Media" to "Your Ultimate Source For Pancake Helicopter Tutorials", the spider would gather the fact that we changed it and update the index on the search engine it comes from. Also say if you googled something like a question, it may link to a thread on KHV where the same question was asked because a spider added that thread to the search engine under those keywords.

Then why are they portrayed here as a threat? Or are those bots...

Bots are simply computers trained to do a certain task. Both the spiders that gather search information and the spambots are bots. The spiders are just benevolent ones.
