Can any of those blown up weapons be put in a cannon to fire at enemies? I know we have lasers, but nothing beats the sheer moral-crushing of having shrapnel fly at you at half the speed of light.

No, space fireworks are THE most important part. We should have a firework that explodes and forms an image of the captain's head!
