The Yugioh Card Duel Arena 9.0

I would like to welcome you all to our new series "Counter That Card!" where we discuss ways to defeat cards that some would say are "broken" or "need to be banned". For today's article, we'll be addressing recent complaints about Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World.



First, we'll look at the most straight-forward way to take him down. Attacking. Grapha has 2700 attack, meaning he's normally rather strong, but can be taken down by stronger cards, like Red Dragon Archfiend and Acid Golem.



However, it's important to note that Grapha will usually be used along with The Gates of Dark World, which gives all fiends a 300 point boost, so it's best to counter Grapha with fiends of your own, like Blood Mefist.



Now we get to Grapha's true strength, and how you can exploit it to your advantage. His summoning condition is "You can Special Summon this card (from your Graveyard) by returning 1 face-up "Dark World" monster you control to the hand, except "Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World"." so even if you beat him down once, he can rise from the grave, as Dark World monsters tend to do. The straight-forward approach of having a bigger monster means you can keep beating him down, but due to his large attack, you'll often find that the only way to get rid of him is to use a destruction effect which costs you cards, while bringing Grapha back normally only costs the opponent a summon. When this happens, your best option is to banish him. The two best options to accomplish this are Macro Cosmos, and Dimensional Fissure, but those cards require specific decks to use, and this series is about how you can "Counter That Card!" with any deck, and we wont ask you to change your deck.



The next best way is by use of D.D. Crow. You can discard Crow at any time to banish one card in your opponent's grave. To summon Grapha, Dark World players will often normal summon a weak monster like Broww, return it to their hand, and then discard it for advantage later. Once they summon their monster, you can chain Crow before they have a chance to use Grapha, thus stopping their current play, and stopping them from setting up future plays both with the monster they summoned and with Grapha.



The last effect to look out for is Grapha's effect on discard. ". If this card is discarded to the Graveyard by a card effect: Target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy that target,"

There are two cards that stop this effect in its tracks, and also stop its first effect, but can't be put into every deck. If you don't rely on using your own Graveyard and Banishment Zone, You can add in Soul Drain, which will stop every Dark World monster's effect, as well as countering other decks that rely heavily on Graveyard effects. If you don't use DARK monsters, you can use Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror, which will also stop the effects of all Dark World monsters, as well as countering decks that use a lot of DARK monsters, like Inzektors.


Activate by paying 1000 Life Points. The effects of monsters that are banished or are in the Graveyard cannot be activated.

Grapha's final trick is one you wont have to worry about much. "If this card was discarded from your hand to your Graveyard by an opponent's card effect, look at 1 random card in your opponent's hand, then, if it was a monster, you can Special Summon it to your side of the field." As long as you don't use discard effects of your own, this will almost never be a problem. If your opponent wants to try to activate it on their own, they'll have to discard Ceruli, who will then special summon to your side of the field, and force your opponent to discard a card of their choice, or Dark Deal, which will change one of your spells to forcing your opponent to discard a random card. Either of these can be negated with standard counter-traps.

I'm gonna admit, my last post in here was almost purely out of anger and frustration at how terribly one-sided my duel against a friend's new deck was...yes, I am fallible to such bouts of rage.

But anyway, I still think Grapha needs some limitation. Yes, you just outlined easy ways to get rid of it, but having to get rid of 3 of them can be trouble, unless you do have cards that shut down effects for the Graveyard...which I don't. On Dueling Network, obviously I can use any cards. In real life, nope...

Still, I'm trying to construct a new deck that'll be able to both counter tactics such as the Dark World, and pose a threat against the newer deck types being used now.

can i say the truth? you play decks with 44+ cards.
Its a annoying to see people with bad decks saying **** about Good Cards.

Six sams are **** deck.No one uses,and six sams are trash.

Okay seriously, First you say Ojamas are a pro deck and next you say Inzektors are a fail deck. And one time I think I even remember hearing you say that Crystal Beasts were good and now you say this? Seriously what's happened to you man?

I know I may have changed and am probably not the person you admire anymore but you yourself have also changed. The Rafael I know would never have said something like this:

The Rafael I knew thought any deck could be good when built right and worked wonders with every deck he played. And he also said that everyone was a good Duelist and believed in everyone and would try to help them with their deck if they lacked confidence. By saying all this you are not only insulting me the man who you claimed to admire so much and calling me a bad Duelist but also Terra the other Duelist who you admired alot along with other would-be good Duelists who just require self-motivation.

Jeez is this what playing competitively does to people? First my mentor and now you...Does playing competitively turn everyone into an elitist snob who calls certain decks trash and people noobs? Oh and before everyone gangs up on me and says "well you used to be the same way =P" I've learned my lesson now. I've seen the error of my ways. And I said that I was sorry. I realize now that I was wrong to believe the way that I did. Hopefully I can soon turn back into that person who was admired and looked up to by so many again. And I also hope that the same will happen with my mentor and with Rafael...
