If I wanted to go to Africa on a whim...I literally couldn't do it.

They are financial and legal issues in the way.

DON'T EVEN MENTION INTO THE WILD TO ME.

Ever since my sister read the book and saw the movie, she does NOT stop saying "careers are a twentieth century invention and I don't want one" or talking about living the way he did. It's ridiculous. I hate that movie. I found him to be so arrogant.

Christopher Johnson McCandless (February 12, 1968 – mid-August, 1992) was an American itinerant who adopted the name Alexander Supertramp and hiked into the Alaskan wilderness with little food and equipment, hoping to live a period of solitude. Almost four months later, weighing only 67 pounds (30 kg), he died of starvation near Denali National Park and Preserve. Inspired by the details of McCandless's story, author Jon Krakauer wrote a book about his adventures published in 1996 titled Into the Wild. In 2007, Sean Penn directed a film of the same title, with Emile Hirsch portraying McCandless.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think the movie was well done (Eddie Vedder pleasantly surprised me) and I think that his message was okay; we are very materialistic and sometimes it's nice to just go back to a simpler life. But he lived in a fantasy land. Instead of solving his problems, he ran away from them and denounced all humans for living like they do. He went straight into the wilderness without having any idea about his surroundings or how to survive.

Am I the only one who thinks starvation would be one of the worst ways to die?

It's slow and painful and the whole time you know what's happening but you can't do anything about it until you finally get so weak you drop dead.

    Ew, just... Ugh.

I know right. o_o The end of the movie where he starved to death freaked me out, he was like collapsing all over the place and it was horrible.
I think the main problem is that people romanticize what he did. Everyone sees him as this hero, this visionary. But really, I think that he was just unable to move on from his past and therefore had this grudge against the two things he blamed: his parents and society. Going to 'into the wild' was his way of rebelling, and he was far too reckless about it.

Then build yourself a beautiful ****ing raft and go to Africa. I hope the lions tear you limb from limb. =D

Yeah, the part where he starved to death was really scary... i wouldn't want to starve to death I love food too much!! :)

And yeah, I think he realized the things he did wrong a little bit towards the end. I mean he still was against society and his parents... But he really was just a kid. He made bad decisions.

That's something I liked about the story; I don't know if it was true, but when he realized at the end that he should stop hiding and running away (with the 'to call everything by its true name' part).

It would have been at least marginally better for him if he brought a compass.
