    Sky News report

According to a video my dad had just shown me a woman in Connecticut had called the police that her pet chimp had brutally killed her friend supposedly ripping her apart. My dad said that she shouldn't of had a pet chip at adult age seeing how they can be strong and violent I agree with him on that.

This is a perfect example of why we should not try to tame animals that are not only wild, but are almost as intelligent as we are. The only reason dogs and cats are seen as pets is because they have been tamed over millennia (dogs were first tamed sometime after Humans left Africa and gained herding skills, around 10-20 thousand years ago, and cats were first tamed in Egypt, at least 8 thousand years ago, I believe).

Given a few hundred thousand years, assuming they survive that long, Chimpanzees could very well attain early human intelligence. And another million years or so, if conditions are right, they would be our equals. After all, it is threat, danger, and change that breeds evolution. They already learn how to use rudimentary tools to crack open nuts (they learn it from the mother), and have complex social groups. How would one of us feel if we were put in a diaper and paraded around a house as a pet?

And yes, it is quite likely that the chimp ripped apart it's victim. A fully grown wild chimp can easily send a heavyset man flying across a room. They use this to great effect hunting in the wild (when they eat meat, anyways - it doesn't happen too often - mostly territorial disputes (cannibalism occasionally, if the offending group doesn't leave) or when they are hungry enough).

...yeah,call the police while your friend is getting brutally beaten by a 200lb. animal, good idea.Don't try and stab it in the back or help out at all.

I mean, if a robber was in your home trying to rape your mother, would you just sit back and call the cops while it was happening?

God this lady really annoys me

Rapists can't literally rip you part. It's virtually useless to attack an enraged ape. Once the adrenaline starts pumping in them, they get so strong, it's virtually impossible to kill them without shotguns. Regrettable as it is, she did the right thing.

The owner is clearly at fault for not controlling her dangerous pet. It's as simple as that.

No, she's technically not, because how do you control something with near-human intelligence? Chimps are nearly intelligent! They do not deserve to be trussed up in diapers and paraded around as a pet! they need to be left alone in their natural habitat!

Loads of people have tamed primeapes! You can tame any animal if u give it your time and patience. Train it to respect you and your orders. But it has to be from an infant so it knows its boundaries. With Killing herfrend its kinda bad, either she didnt bring it up correctly (cuz with apes u should bring them up like you would a child, animal or not) or she brought it at an adult age~

    Heh heh, human slavery anyone?

Meh, this actually made me laugh. Im probably a sadist, but the story sounded rather ridiculous so I lol'd.

Why have a pet you can't control?

@ who ever said you cant kill an ape unless its with a shotgun - Erm, you could still try and distract the animal from killing your friend. A good ol' kitchen knife in the back would've solved the situation. Or a blast of heavy metal from your stereo could've stunned it for a while :v

You do realise that if she got close enough she would of ended up like her friend and then the chimp would be loose and kill probably more people.

Let's try to make this clear: A. Chimpanzee. Is. Many. Times. Stronger. Than. A. Human! You CANNOT overpower it unless you A)are some kind of bodybuilder/martial aritst skilled in cutting weapons or B)have a high-powered gun of some kind (shotgun, rifle, etc. NOT a handgun). Throwing heavy objects at it would only enrage it further. Calling the police or, better, Animal Control, was the smartest thing to do.

This could all have been avoided if the law in America made the possession of non-domesticated animals as "pets". What possible extra joy could a chimp bring that a dog couldn't? And anyway, as has been said, it is degrading and harmful to put an animal in a position that it (as a species) is not used to.

news on TV said that she stabbed the animal in an attempt to save the friend, it was useless until police shot it to death apparently.

I honestly feel more sorry for the chimp than for any humans that were injured.

I agree with this. A monkey is just too "weird" pet to own. Keep them in the zoo, or in the wild, not among everyday people. There are certain reasons pet shops only sell certain types of food (and not for monkeys).

Although I don't want to come across as heartless, I feel sorry for the person who was attacked and wouldnt wish it on anyone...however I still stand by my point above^

Do note: Chimps are the most aggressive primates. They will attack unprovoked and will do anything to show their aggressiveness.

They were talking about how Gorillas are compared to chimps, and how they can be the same pet. THAT is not true. I do agree primates should not be kept as pets, but gorillas are actually less hostile unless their defending their nests babies or territory.

The thing is, any animal, any... Cat, dog, chimp, even a snake... You. Cannot. Make. It. Human. Ceaser Milan, who I watch whenever I can has to dehumanize dogs all the time because they're at the top of the pack, people carry their dogs, put bows in their hair and pamper them and coo over them when they get scared to the point where they're aggressive, and then they will try to rip your face off if given the chance. You have to treat the animal like it would be in the wild, let it be that animal. If you don't, you're asking for trouble all around.

All true, except that you do want to housetrain dogs and cats, seeing as it'll be messy if you don't. And dogs/cats are many times safer to kep as pets than any other animal, because, as I said, we have been breeding them and training them for millenia. Wolves or wolf-bred dogs, or any of the big cats (lions, cheetahs, etc) do not have this history and must be treated with extreme caution, even after training.
