Today, we found out that our dog has cancer. On Tuesday we're going to get his tumors removed and according to the vet he has a good chance of that curing it. Christians, please pray for us. Atheists, cross your fingers.

Anyway, I usually am not someone who likes to push his beliefs on other people, but now I feel like I have to say something. If you're a dog owner and you're feeding your dog dry food from a store like Kibble: STOP. IT.

It is seriously fuсking bad for your dog and despite what the advertising says you are probably killing it slowly. There are better alternatives. Dogs should eat raw meats like raw chicken, beef, and/or lamb, as well as vegetables with complex carbs like broccoli. For more information to go BARFworld.com

No offense, but 90% of the time -I- don't even get meats like that. I think I've only ever had lamb once in my life to top that off. Aint no way in hell my dogs eatin' better than me. He's had his bowl of kibble with a can of wet food all his life and is happy. I'll stick with that, lol.

Sorry about the cancer though, I'll pray AND cross my fingers for the best

Well no offense to you, but you should not own a dog if you don't have a means to give it what it needs.
Read this link. The whole thing.
If you don't have time here's the tl;dr version:
In North America, ‘mammalian meat and bone meal’, a key animal component in pet food, has been shown to include the ground-up remains of euthanised cats and dogs – flea collars, name tags, microchips and all.

(a vet):‘The main part of what I do is taking them off a commercial diet and putting them on to a raw diet, and that is where I see the biggest difference. I’ve had dogs which have been expected to die and they’ve left me with a clean bill of health simply because I’ve put them on the raw diet.’

    Thank you.

I don't believe for a second that the dry dog food isn't good for dogs, my grandma had a dog which lived until it was eighteen eating only dry food. The dog race's average lifespan was eleven years. I don't believe what you're saying and I won't either. But then again I don't have a dog and I don't plan on getting one either so it doesn't really matter.

I'll pray for your dog though, hope everything goes well

The title of this thread is what caught me.
Anyways, sorry to hear about your dog, I've had a similar experience, only with my grandfather's pet. =(

I am aware that this may be offensive and I'm sorry if it is, but in case you didn't know, most news sites like that are only there to provide sensational stories with a slight hint of truth. It's plain, simple, yellow journalism.

Anyway, I hope your dog gets better, but all that's left is to wait and pray.

You have an attitude problem, definitely easy to tell where you usually hang around. What I was saying was that I wouldn't believe it for a second, since I had experienced that cool story.

It may also depend on breed, breeding methodology, and lineage. There's a lot of factors that can affect a dog's health, and food may very well be an issue for some, but not all food is mass processed by the same company. You just need to find a reliable brand and stick with it.

I do know what it's like to have a dog with cancer, so if you need advice or anything talk to me. I'd be more than happy to help and I wish you and your dog the best of luck.

Wow, so fuсking sorry for having an attitude problem during the day I found out that my dog has cancer. I understand most people are in great moods when that happens.

Sadly "reliable brands" are very hard to come by and there will really be nothing better than just giving your dog raw meats like the wolves do it.

And thank you, I really appreciate that.

What brand have you been using?
The problem with raw meat is that in excess, it could potentially increase your dog's chance of getting worms or other parasites. Even if it's meat humans would eat, you have to consider the consequences of raw food as well. Remember, dogs aren't wolves; they descended from them but domestication has reduced their need (and resistance to potential parasites) for raw meat. I'd suggest heavily researching both the pros and cons of each food type, as well as consult your vet, before changing your dog's diet.

I understand what it's like, having had two dogs with cancer, but if the vet said that there's a good chance of yours pulling through, I'm sure everything will turn out okay. I won't say it'll be an easy process, especially recovery, but the will to live in animals is an amazing thing. Again, best of luck.

We haven't been using any brands. Ever since we found out about the awful stuff in store food we started feeding him rice mixed with cooked ground beef (We were scared of raw meat at the time), about a year ago. Before that, we used Kibble. Our vet told us today that switching to the rice was a good step in the right direction, but it wasn't enough. He was the one who said we need to start giving him raw meat, and he went off about grocery store dry food and how terrible it is. So yeah, we're confident in the BARF diet now and we're switching to it.

And yeah, I'm fully prepared for what'll come out way as long as he comes out of it alive. I love him to death and I really can't stand the though of losing him but like you said the doctor said he has good chances. He said it was probably a mast cell tumor (He couldn't be sure) and I looked that up and apparently if you catch those early (We did) the results can usually be really good.
Waiting until Tuesday is going to suck.

I was about to type up a sob story about my cat from a few months ago but then realized it would be more depressing than helpful. All that really matters is that I can empathize with you some. I'll be praying.

I was going to make a stupid joke about wetting dry food and that being okay (well something to that effect) to lighten the mood and then I realised that it would be inappropriate.

Anyway, I remember when my Grandma's dog died, it was horrible. I'm so sorry to hear about the cancer so I'll be praying.

I actually do that with unseasoned ramen broth. Grandma used it because she believed the enzymes in the broth reacted with certain things in the kibble to make it healthier. It's probably not true, but we've been doing it ever since her own dog died and she told us to try it with ours.

If I really am, I'm sorry. I honestly don't try to be that way and no one has said anything to me.
I haven't done any research on cats so I'm not sure but on all the research I've done for dogs (Which is a lot) I did see a few things that said it's the same for cats too.

    Ignore Christhor.

I'm pretty sure Wolfie has a point: factors vary for each dog, but if they're putting ground up collars and stuff, then yeah, that's pretty bad >>
Anyway, I hope it works out for you<3
