Normal is whatever you are comfortable with. Of course there are moral exceptions, but in the context of this debate what is normal does not equal what is moral, nor what is right.

Normal just means to me what the majority of the environment around you is like to perceive and learn from. If 90% of society wears a red shirt, that's normal. If you are in a neighborhood where gays and straights get along and people of any color work together and get paid the same etc, that would be normal to you. If females are all regarded in the community as lesser than men, this is normal to the people there. If you are raised out in the jungle with some pygmies and that's what you've known all your life, that's what's normal to you.

Normal isn't really a great word, just as I don't really like the word 'perfect' either. People often use what is 'normal' as an argument to shun change and growth. Just because something seems 'normal', as in this group majority does it, does not mean it is always a positive thing. It is just a condition of an area in which you are at or a behavior pattern that the majority do nearly habitually. 'Abnormal' would be anything that stands out as something not typical of the people of an area. It's hard to explain exactly and I'll think on fixing this up later.

There is no such thing as normal, for one thing everyone is unique, therefore the idea of a normal is crushed. Even people who think similar aren't exactly the same. Normal to you is most liklely to be different to what I would consider normal and vice versa. The generation above me has a different idea of what normal is compared to the generation below me. Normal is something that cannot be defined as one thing.

    IMO anywayz.

Normal is an illusion. Because everything and every one is different, nothing can be considered normal. Since everything is different we can't all have the same "normal." The world is abnormal, and so, as I said in the beginning; normal is an illusion.

But if we have no objective form of normality then we don't have any form of actual abnormality either. So it's not necessarily that we're all abnormal, that's a judgment based on your point of view regarding normal. Instead we simply are.

    Normal... Hmm...

After all this thinking and reading and analyzing and stuff, my brain hurts. But I agree with everyone here. Basically. Kind of. In a way. There is only normal in your head. What is normal to you is not to others. My brain hurts.

Well, what I was implying was: What makes a society "normal" to begin with?

I believe there is no such thing as normal. Nobody's perfect. I honestly hate people that say they are perfect or they have a perfect life. That is just bull.Everybody is bound to have their ups and downs.

Normal is whatever people tell you it is. Its not whatever is most common, or accepted. Its just what people tell you it is.

It doesnt mean anything special to be called normal to me.

It is subjective and relative. What you're told "here" is more often than not not normal "there".

Well if you're implying a certain impossibility of normality, then without an established contrast we aren't necessarily "strange" either. We have our tinges of uniqueness but we simply just are.

normal? that's an easy one. i guess our definition of normal would be how alike we are to the majority of the population in things like personality, fashion, and money.
