Finally, to contribute to this thread, I agree with Christhor that a lot of Nintendo games are just altered stories with the same gaming format. When it comes to Nintendo, I don't have many high hopes at all, but I'm sure they've got a few good ideas up their sleeves as they're still a highly respectable corporation :\

 

Why change the format if it's good?

 

Unlike the Zelda games Kingdom Hearts II had a story that wasn't exactly the same as the first one, and the fundemental gameplay was changed, which they have been for basically all Kingdom Hearts games. They have some differences, Wind Waker had an artsy artstyle, Twilight Princess had you turning into a wolf at times, bells and whistles. The core gameplay still feels ten years old, which is because it hasn't been changed in ten years. The only times Nintendo are original is when they're ruining gaming by releasing all those motion controllers that don't work *nod* They're only releasing Mario, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Mario, Metroid, Mario, some games that were once original and great, but haven't been changed in ten years, in 3D and some more Mario. 80% of their games are rehashes, Pokemon is another example and Mario Party is too.

Which is all fine and dandy, but you can't call the games original anymore when there hasn't been any changes in quite a while and there isn't really diversity when they always release the same games.

 

Let me just stop you right there. It's unfair to say that the Zelda stories are all "The same" because they're all part of a larger story. As for the core gameplay, you are crazy if you think it's the same across all the Zelda games. I mean just look at OOT and MM. MM has you playing as 4 different characters! The 3 day cycle introduces a completely new sense of urgency, the "Central Town/Open World" aspect is pushed much further, boss fights are basically incomparable, I could go on. People love calling Nintendo games rehashes but the majority of them aren't. Using the same character does not make a game a rehash.

 

If it's not broke, don't fix it, right?

 

You don't seem to know what core gameplay is. Someone who has only played one of the Zelda games can easily play any of the others instantly, they are the same fundemental game. As I said, bells and whistles, they add those kind of arbitrary things to fool you into thinking the game is original, it's really not though. :c

If everyone stuck with that then you wouldn't have Fallout 3/New Vegas

 

Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 were still amazing though, so I would have been just as happy with a Fallout 3 made by Interplay.

 

I know it's not *original*, nothing is original anymore. But calling it a rehash is completely unfair. And no, that's not true at all. Beating the final boss of MM is impossible if you can't use the masks correctly. The mask concept in MM is not bells and whistles at all...it completely changes the gameplay of that game.

 

Same could be said about games like Assassin's Creed. The core gameplay is the same in every game but it works and the only thing fans are looking for are a couple of new features. It's the exact same with Zelda and most game series today.

 

Why stick with bananas when you can have a lot of fish as well?

There's a difference between being original and varied. They changed for one game and afterwards went straight back to the same concept *nod*

The difference is that most series aren't around for 25 years. And what they lack in gameplay variation they make up for in story variation.

 

It says something if a game series can last 25 years. xD

Well yeah, I never tried to argue that the series had fans D: Just that you can't say it's original anymore, y'know?
